Your support has made an immediate and meaningful impact on my students, and I want you to know how deeply appreciated your gift truly is.\r\n\r\nMiddle school is such a critical time for developing a student's identity as a reader. At the 8th grade level, students are navigating more complex texts, forming opinions, and beginning to see reading as either something they connect with—or something they avoid. One of the biggest challenges as an ELA teacher is helping students cross that bridge into seeing themselves as capable, engaged readers. Your donation has helped make that possible.\r\n\r\nSince introducing these new books into our classroom, I have seen a noticeable shift in student engagement. What used to feel like a routine requirement has started to feel like a choice. Students are showing genuine curiosity—picking up books, exploring different genres, and asking thoughtful questions about what they're reading. Some students who previously struggled to stay focused during independent reading time are now immersed in their books, eager to continue even when the time is up.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, we have been able to build a more consistent and meaningful independent reading routine. Students now have access to texts that reflect their interests, experiences, and reading levels. This has allowed them to build stamina, improve comprehension, and grow in confidence. They are not just reading more—they are reading with purpose.\r\n\r\nWhat has been especially powerful is the sense of ownership students are beginning to take. They are recommending books to each other, discussing characters and themes, and making connections that go beyond the page. These are the moments that truly matter in an ELA classroom.\r\n\r\nYour donation has also helped create a classroom environment where reading feels inviting and accessible. There is a sense of excitement when students browse the classroom library, and a sense of pride when they find a book that resonates with them. These small moments are building something much bigger—a foundation for lifelong literacy.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher, it is incredibly meaningful to witness this shift. The opportunity to see students grow not only in skill, but in confidence and curiosity, is why I do this work. Your generosity has directly supported that growth, and it has made a lasting difference in the daily experiences of my students.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in the importance of literacy and for investing in my classroom. Your gift has gone far beyond providing books—you have helped spark curiosity, build confidence, and create a space where students are excited to read.","fullyFundedDate":1765421952520,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-library/9952938/","projectTitle":"Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bussineau","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10379886"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72552","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":91,"numTeachers":7,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":98,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.5,"schoolId":72552,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Detroit Lions Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Detroit Lions Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/detroit-public-schools-community-district/detroit-lions-alternative-middle-school/72552"}
