I was extremely pleased to have been heard, and began to prepare my plans for the year.\r\n\r\nThe very first recipe that my students followed was for no-cook play dough. We talked about, looked at, and handled measuring cups and spoons. The kids played with getting one cup or spoon off of the ring, and back on again. When mixing, they experimented with using varying spoons and rubber spatulas to see which worked best. They counted drops of food coloring and mixed colors to get another. Absolutely, fantastic! The dough turned out perfectly!\r\n\r\nWhen we were finished packaging the play dough, one of my students asked if we could ever make cookies. There were student tables, my desk, and a reading area. \r\n\r\nThe reading area soon became the favorite place to be. Noticing this, I quickly acquired fluffy bean bags to sit in and a cool shag rug. We have our Read-Aloud/SEL period there everyday. It's right after lunch time, and I wish you could see those kids rushing over there to plop onto a chair and get cozy, with all eyes on me! \r\n\r\nTowards the end of the period, I ask them to pull out books to consider for tomorrow. We leaf through them, talk about what they might be about, and pick one out for the next Read-Aloud.\r\n\r\nIf it weren't for your donation, we would have to settle for our Read-Alouds projected on the big white board. We played lots of games and learned routines. The most anticipated and enjoyed is our painting routine. \r\n\r\nFrom gathering our tools to cleaning them afterward, my students are so eager and engaged. We rotate jobs like, Tools and Materials Gatherer, Mess Avoidance Officer, and Paint Manager. When we sit and paint together, the kids are always commenting on what the others are painting, or how they are painting. You can see their methods being influenced and broadened.\r\n\r\nSometimes the painting is part of a larger project, so they follow directions. Other times, they are free to use brushes, stamps, mini rollers, cotton swabs or their fingers to create whatever they want. It is going so well! \r\n\r\nAs we continue our science lessons, it is so nice to have books on hand. Our classroom library will only continue to grow! I had to find replacement items. I selected some other titles and a bookshelf!\r\n\r\nAs time goes on, more shelves and titles will be added, but your contributions got it all started!\r\n\r\nOn Monday, March 2nd, I welcome my first students. I am so pleased with the way the space looks and feels.
