They immediately wanted to help organize our classroom and decide where different materials should go. It was wonderful to see them take ownership of our space and understand that keeping our classroom organized is something we can all work together to accomplish.\r\n\r\nThe classroom snacks have also been a wonderful addition. Students are grateful to have a snack available when they are hungry, and it helps them stay focused and ready to learn throughout the school day. It may seem like a small thing, but having a snack can make a big difference for a young learner who is struggling to concentrate because they are hungry.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, my students will keep using our organized materials during literacy centers, math activities, small-group instruction, and independent learning. They are able to focus for longer periods of time and complete tasks with greater independence. Students are excited to come to the table and use the magnetic pieces to build words, practice phonics skills, solve math problems, and show what they know.\r\n\r\nThe new sensory storage has also helped students independently access the tools they need while keeping our classroom calm and organized. It has been wonderful to see students learn that they can recognize what their bodies need and choose an appropriate tool to help them refocus.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building independence and engagement through our literacy and small-group learning activities. Students will continue using the magnetic boards for phonics and word-building practice, while our classroom library will encourage them to explore new books and develop a love of reading. This is especially helpful for first graders who are still developing their decoding skills because they can enjoy and understand stories that may be above their independent reading level.\r\n\r\nMy students are most excited about being able to choose their own stories and listen to them independently. They love having choices and being able to explore books and stories that interest them. The screen-free design is also exciting because students can enjoy technology without being distracted by a screen.\r\n\r\nSome of my emerging readers have especially warmed to audio learning because it allows them to participate in literacy experiences without feeling frustrated by difficult words. Students who benefit from hearing information rather than only seeing it are able to engage with stories in a way that feels comfortable and successful. We are working on identifying how we feel, choosing a strategy that helps us, and then returning to our learning ready to focus.
