This year, over fifty students have read the book and pondered the question: what makes a monster? In response, students discussed the dangers of unchecked ambition, the effects of a traumatic upbringing, and the consequences of stereotypes and prejudice. Students connected themes from the novel to the real world. \r\n\r\nAs they read, students dove into complex themes and connected those themes to their own lives and the world around them. After witnessing the consequences of Victor's unchecked ambition, students researched examples of ambition gone awry in the real world and reflected on their own ambitions. Students also made cross-curricular connections, researching the psychology concepts of stereotype threat and self-fulfilling prophecies. They used this knowledge to explain how the creature's perceptions of himself soured based on the negative reactions that others had towards him. \r\n\r\nOne of the students' favorite activities during the unit was a mock trial. They debated whether Frankenstein or his monster was responsible for the tragedies throughout the novel. They acted as lawyers, witnesses, and jury members. While preparing for the trial, I watched each student excitedly comb through the book for evidence to support their case. They experienced so much joy and passion for learning during this activity, and I could not be more proud of their performances. \r\n\r\nAgain, thank you for your contribution to my classroom. With your help, students were able to meet high academic expectations, read a story that they love, and think critically about real-world issues.","fullyFundedDate":1761000437322,"projectUrl":"project/frankenstein-what-makes-a-monster/9833165/","projectTitle":"Frankenstein: What Makes a Monster?","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Vener","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10313874"},{"teacherId":9459506,"projectId":9554276,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! \r\n\r\nStudents are often asked to write on plain white paper, with pencil or black or blue ink; this is a standard expectation. Students entered the room and immediately noticed the colorful paper waiting for them in the back of the room. Students were asked to select a color of their choice for the creative writing activity. They were thrilled!!! Many students stated multiple times how excited they were to have options! They could select the color of their paper, and each student could choose the color of their pen or pencil (again, their choice). I received immediate buy-in, students were engaged, and they loved the creative options. \r\n\r\nStudents will regularly ask if we can write on colorful paper instead of the boring white. Students are willing to take more chances with their writing. Thank you so much for funding this supply list.
