Our Book-a-Day read-alouds help students build vocabulary, listening comprehension, and an understanding of characters, emotions, and big ideas. \r\n\r\nThe stand-up whiteboards have also made a big impact during math. Using the Building Thinking Classrooms approach, students work together at the boards to solve problems, explain their thinking, and learn from each other. Students who were once hesitant to participate are now more willing to take risks and share ideas. Together, these tools have helped build confidence, collaboration, and excitement for learning. My class particularly loved using the materials to explore the properties of candy. They loved testing the melting point of different candies to determine which would be best to pack on a hot trip. Students tested, observed, and revised their ideas as they investigated physical science and basic engineering concepts. These experiences helped students develop critical thinking skills, practice collaboration, and gain confidence!
