With the shelving unit that we received I made color and shape labeled task boxes. The students are then given a task box to complete as an independent work activity. We have been working on independent skills since the beginning of the year, but this system allows students to have as much or as little independence as they are ready for during work times. Most students at this time are working on identifying the box that matches their color and shape, taking it to the work table, completing the task and then return the task box back to the shelf. I have 2 students who are currently able to be given a list of 2-3 task boxes to complete independently, and I'm excited to keep working on building these skills since I will have the same students for multiple years.\r\n\r\nThe letter bins that were provided for my classroom have been used in multiple ways. Each bin has a letter on the front and is filled with 6 items that begin with that letter. While I do use some of them in the independent task box system for sorting, I have found many more ways to make this resource useful for my students. For example, they have made a great center for our literacy block to teach letter sounds. I might hold up a rainbow and emphasize the beginning sound to help my students identify the correct starting letter sound. Once the sound has been identified, I can then guide students to find the corresponding letter that makes the sound. My students have found these bins so interesting that two of them regularly ask if they can \"play\" with the letter bins during structured play or choice times. There is nothing like the joy a teacher feels when her students want to engage with educational materials by choice - especially when cars, blocks and playdoh might also be choices!
