Students test out different ways to manipulate the Play Doh with and without tools. Some make shapes, others make animals, foods and other things from their personal experience. For others, it's simply a sensory experience of feeling the Play Doh working between their fingers and palms of the hands. As students work, I have conversations with them, giving them the opportunity to develop both every day and art specific vocabulary.\r\nPlay Doh is also used as a preparation for their model magic projects. Before beginning their work with model magic, students are given a theme. With that theme in mind, students practice their ideas with the Play Doh, and look at reference pictures. This helps them to decide what they will make with the model magic and practice the necessary techniques. \r\nFor this project students had the following themes for model magic; grade Prek/K caterpillars, grade 1 monsters, grade 2 foods, grade 4 and 5 dragon eyes. \r\nOne thing they all had to do to create their sculptures, was mix marker into their model magic for all the colors they wanted. This was a great moment of discovery as students made color mixtures of primary colors to create secondary colors. They all had so much fun making their masterpieces!\r\nIn the end, each sculpture was made into a magnet. Students treasured their work. This project made a great impact on our delivery of curriculum but more importantly, it impacted their lives in a personal way.","fullyFundedDate":1746138597869,"projectUrl":"project/3d-art-for-all-students/9115647/","projectTitle":"3D Art for All Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Olivera","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/183091"},{"teacherId":9919023,"projectId":9227442,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation! The students were so excited to receive their kindness punch cards, stickers, bracelets, candy and other fun prizes. From the moment we introduced the materials, there was a buzz of excitement in the air.\r\n\r\nThroughout the week, students eagerly took on the challenge of completing acts of kindness—holding doors open, sharing with others, inviting new friends to sit with them at lunch, and giving heartfelt compliments. It was heartwarming to see them go out of their way to be kind and inclusive, all while having fun and supporting one another. They were especially happy to hold the door for every teacher, in an attempt to receive a punch on their punch cards.\r\n\r\nOne of the most memorable moments was during \"Secret Kindness Agent\" day, where students completed kindness missions without being discovered. Watching them light up with pride when they were praised for their kindness was truly special. Some of our students who were struggling with positive peer interactions were more than happy to give compliments and share items with other students. Us counselors noticed a more positive and supportive atmosphere in the classrooms and hallways, with students cheering each other on and actively trying to make each other's day better.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, our students learned that kindness isn't just about getting prizes—it's about making the people around them feel good and building a happier, more welcoming school environment. One project that stands out is our math-based sports analytics project, where students are using the data analysis tools we received to evaluate real-world sports statistics. They've been collecting data from basketball games, analyzing player performance, and using mathematical models to predict future outcomes. It's a fun, hands-on way to connect their passion for sports with their love of math, and they've been fully engaged in every step.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, there was an excited buzz in the room! Students immediately began experimenting with the software and tools, eager to dive into their new projects. They've loved having access to resources that make their learning feel more relevant to their interests, and it's given them a renewed sense of excitement about math. The materials are providing them with practical skills they can use in real-life situations, which has been a game-changer for their motivation.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, the next steps for this project involve applying the mathematical concepts they've learned to create predictive models based on their sports data. Students will present their findings to the class, and we're excited to showcase their work at an upcoming student exhibition. Their faces lit up with curiosity and excitement. They could not wait to explore the colorful new manipulatives and dive into their sessions. The mirrors, in particular, have been a game changer, allowing students to visually observe their articulatory movements and make real time corrections. These tools have made speech therapy sessions more interactive and effective. \r\n\r\nOne specific project we recently did involve creating personalized storybooks. Each student designed their own story using the manipulatives to brainstorm and sequence their ideas. This activity not only enhanced their language and storytelling skills but also fostered creativity and confidence in expressing themselves. My students were making strong verbal expressions, sharing their storybook with me and their fellow peers. This activity focused on improving sentence structure and vocabulary usage. Moments like these are priceless and affirm the importance of having the right tools to support learning. \r\n\r\nWith these resources my students are building foundational skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom. Currently we are working on sequencing and narrative-building. Using the storybooks helps us to practice describing events in logical order. The mirrors are also very important tools that help students work on articulation goals, helping them achieve clearer and more confident speech. \r\n\r\nThese materials have not only enhanced my students' learning but have also reinvigorated my teaching. Having high-quality, engaging tools allows me to provide individualized and meaningful instruction that meets the diverse needs of my students.
