We are all benefitting from the area it has allowed me to reclaim in my incredibly busy and diverse learning space.\r\n\r\nI am both a special education intervention teacher and an art teacher. The art my students produce is done collaboratively for the benefit of our school and our community. The projects are often huge, taking up much of the space in my classroom. The repurposed materials used for these projects take up an enormous amount of space as well. Last year, my room was chaotic. Many of the materials we used didn't have a place to live, and students were less able to care for and appropriately store those materials. The chaos also bled into the academic learning space I use for my intervention classes, causing my neurodivergent students to be more distracted and less settled as they often had the art materials in close enough reach to touch and play with them.\r\n\r\nThis year, as a direct result of your donations, I was able to create a distinct division in the room, art on one side and academic learning on the other side. My materials all have a home and the students have a chance to build executive function skills as they take responsibility for materials and organization. As you can see from the pictures, I not only used the shelving for storage and organization but was also able to build a cardboard wall separating the room. The impact that your donations had on the students at my school is tremendous. The extra uniforms were greatly appreciated and all students had access to our Care Closet when needed. To provide a little background, we have a Care Closet at our school that one of our amazing graduate students created for her AmeriCorps project. She stocked it with toiletries and hygiene products for students. The uniforms that were funded through this project were added to the closet to provide additional resources for students. \r\n\r\nWhenever students needed a polo shirt, sweatshirt, or pants, they knew that the school had the closet stocked. We had students in need of extra uniforms for a variety of reasons. Some students were in need of new clothing as a result of a lunch mishap. Others needed a sweatshirt due to the cold temperatures. Sometimes students needed a couple extra shirts to throw into their weekly rotation. Some students ripped their pants for one reason or another and didn't have a backup pair. We had a couple students who needed pants as part of their costume for an upcoming dance showcase. Knowing that the school had extra uniforms minimized the potential feelings of stress and anxiety that may accompany not having what you need during the school day. \r\n\r\nThe project was such a success and provided much needed support to all students. As the year went on, students knew where to go if they needed clothing. The sweatshirts and pants were the first items we ran out of. We still have a few polo shirts in various sizes that can be rolled into our next school year. My hope is to create a new project to continue to stock our Care Closet with sweatshirts, pants, and winter jackets.\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you so very much for funding this project. Without these donations, we wouldn't have been able to supply students with extra clothing when they found themselves in need. This gave my students an opportunity to grow skills in self-directed learning, planning, time and materials management, collaboration, motivation, and perseverance. My students all demonstrated improvement in these critical life skills. \r\n\r\nThe Mushroom Forest project not only engaged students actively taking my class but also allowed students and staff from across the building to offer design input and feedback and to take part in the creation process. Of the images I posted, in addition to students from my CATTA (Community Action Through The Arts) class, you see two 12th grade students who led the creation of the shell and another image of one of my English 7 students helping install moss on the floor of the forest. I had a few 6th graders that made creations inspired by the forest during my after-school enrichment sessions. Staff would stop in to help with ideas and to shower praise on the students for their efforts. And since the forest has been installed, so many people from the school community and visitors have popped into my room to express the excitement and magic they feel when they view the Mushroom Forest.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has given our school community the opportunity to bring a wondrously beautiful installation into our daily experience that exemplifies the impact of successful collaboration, perseverance, and creative expression.
