Because of your generosity, my students were able to read Hiroshima by John Hersey, a text that deeply changed how they understand one of the most pivotal and devastating moments in world history.\r\n\r\nMany people know about the atomic bombs in terms of dates, numbers, and military outcomes, but this book taught my students how to read history through human experience. As they followed the lives of six ordinary people in Hiroshima, students practiced close reading, analyzing author's craft, and using evidence to draw conclusions, but more importantly, they learned empathy. They examined perspective, discussed moral complexity, and learned how nonfiction can tell powerful, personal stories that statistics alone cannot. The book challenged them to think critically about war, technology, and responsibility in a way that felt real and meaningful.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active and collaborative. Students annotate as they read, pause to discuss key moments, and ask thoughtful questions about the choices people faced and the long-term impact of those choices. We connect the text to historical context, class discussions, and reflective writing, allowing students to process what they're learning both intellectually and emotionally. Many students who don't typically enjoy reading became deeply engaged because this book gave history a human face.\r\n\r\nThrough their class project examining this topic, they were able to examine the journey each character took and truly see the devastation caused by the atomic bomb on a more human scale. Their project had them create an artistic representation of one of the characters' journeys, and this artistic endeavor helped them to think in a more meaningful way about the events of the novel and the chaos, pain and despair experienced by each of these characters.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, my students didn't just learn about the atomic bomb — they understood its impact on real lives. That understanding will stay with them far beyond this class. Thank you for helping make that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1754519955343,"projectUrl":"project/hiroshima-bringing-human-stories-and-hi/9520361/","projectTitle":"Hiroshima: Bringing Human Stories and History into the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McDonnell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10103206_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754535393856","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10103206"},{"teacherId":8674358,"projectId":8734107,"letterContent":"I want to express my sincere gratitude for your generous financial donation toward our classroom wishlist.
