This was a very different type of book after 1984, Macbeth, and Beowulf. After a year of hard work, with me demanding a lot from my students, Red Rising was a great end to the semester. I want to share some of the responses my students gave me when I asked them to honestly assess the impact of a Red Rising unit.\r\nHere are some responses, unedited!:\r\n\r\nRed Rising is definitely the most interesting book we have read this year. The book was a great way to teach the ways of society and the way some real world civilizations work. It kept me very interacted and was one of the few books I genuinely enjoyed this year. \r\n\r\nThe addition of Red Rising in my class this year was honestly amazing because the story kept most everyone hooked. It kept the class talking and asking questions about what was going to happen next, and made everyone so eager to know. It was cool seeing how everyone would get so invested in the choices that the characters made throughout the story. \r\n\r\nThe addition of Red Rising in my class this year was thrilling! It is a fantastic book filled with excitement, yet still nuanced and thought-provoking. I love to draw connections to things I've learned elsewhere while reading this book. Red Rising has inspired me to pick up writing new stories. I think about the book throughout my day. I have every intention to read the other books in the series. \r\n\r\nThe addition of Red Rising to Mrs. Ljungbergs class was very welcome. It's genuinely the first book in years i've listened to and read and have been actively engaged. Me and my friends are keeping eachother up to date even when one of us isn't here. that's how intrigued all of us are. I was immediately hooked when i realized the story was going in a different direction than i ever thought it would with the Darrow turning into a gold plot twist. I genuinely really like this book as a whole. \r\n\r\nIf you want me to be completely honest, red rising is the greatest book I have read in my 18 years of living. I hate reading, I hate English (not my teacher the subject), but this book has made me realize something else. It makes you question the authority of characters and shows how you can learn to change things up. I really got into the book when they changed Darrow into a gold was very interesting to me I knew he was gonna fight the hierarchy but I didn't know he would fight it by infiltrating the institute as a gold. I really love this book and I just wanna say thank you for allowing us to have this book and I can't wait to finish this book.\r\n\r\nThis book opened my eyes to a new genre that I would've never willingly read. I am super thankful that these books were donated, as I've had a more than wonderful experience reading this book.\r\n********************************\r\nIt is SO important that we work to combat the literacy crisis in our country, and I felt like this year I needed to think outside of the box a bit. When I realized that a few other English teachers out there also use this book, I wanted to order a set. Unfortunately, our small book budget had already been spent, and any other funds available had been frozen. I had heard of Donors Choose, and thought I would give it a try. Thank you so much for funding this project! It is much appreciated.","fullyFundedDate":1765421773958,"projectUrl":"project/help-us-read-red-rising-by-pierce-brown/9928410/","projectTitle":"Help Us Read Red Rising by Pierce Brown!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ljungberg","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10362485"},{"teacherId":10408364,"projectId":10032215,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity in donating a class set of Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. Your support has allowed my students to experience a powerful and engaging text that has sparked meaningful conversations in our classroom. Through this novel, students are exploring important literary skills such as character development, plot structure, and the impact of point of view. Because the story is written in poetic prose, students are also learning how authors use structure, spacing, and figurative language to create tension and emotion in a unique way.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is highly interactive. Students annotate the text, discuss themes in small groups, and reflect on the choices characters make throughout the story. The book's themes surrounding community, identity, and the consequences of violence encourage students to think critically about the world around them and how individuals make decisions when faced with difficult circumstances. The format of the novel—short, impactful pages—has been especially helpful for building reading confidence and keeping students engaged.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who are typically hesitant readers have been especially drawn to this book. The pacing and poetic style make the story feel fast and intense, and many students have commented on how relatable the characters and emotions feel. It has been incredibly rewarding to see students eager to turn the next page and participate in thoughtful discussions about the story's deeper messages. Your donation has truly helped bring literature to life in our classroom, and we are so grateful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1768941842368,"projectUrl":"project/a-short-way-away-from-a-long-way-down/10032215/","projectTitle":"A Short Way Away from a Long Way Down!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Shepard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10408364"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_47321","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":530,"numTeachers":31,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":85,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":84.4,"schoolId":47321,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Quaboag Regional Middle High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Quaboag Regional Middle High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/quaboag-regional-school-district/quaboag-regional-middle-high-school/47321"}
