Because of you, 8th grade students were able to access a powerful collection of picture books and graphic novels centered on the Civil Rights Movement. These books played exactly the role we hoped they would: they made challenging, complex topics—like systemic racism, school desegregation, and civil disobedience—more accessible and engaging for our students. With vibrant visuals and compelling storytelling, these texts gave students the background knowledge they needed to fully connect with A Mighty Long Way by Carlotta Walls Lanier.\r\n\r\nAs students read Lanier's memoir together, they referred back to the picture books, drawing thoughtful connections between her experiences and those of figures like Emmett Till and Thurgood Marshall. Many were even able to draw connections to current events and activists, reflecting on how the courage and determination of the Little Rock Nine echoes in the movements they see today. The books helped students develop empathy, historical awareness, and a deeper appreciation for the personal sacrifices that shaped our country's path toward justice. Your support has made such a meaningful difference in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe resources you provided have allowed students to accommodate their individual needs during instruction. The rug and cushions have added a layer of comfort and flexibility that many students are drawn to—they love having options for where and how they learn best. The STEM and fidget items have been a hit with early finishers; they provide a low-stakes, engaging way for students to quiet their minds and problem-solve creatively. It's been amazing to watch students bond over new games and activities—connections that may not have happened otherwise.\r\n\r\nWhen everything arrived, my students were so excited to dive in. It came at the perfect time in the year—just when we needed a reset and something fresh to spark joy in our space.\r\n\r\nNext steps for us will be continuing to adjust the classroom setup to prioritize flexibility, comfort, and student choice. Because of you, we've taken a big step in that direction, and we're so grateful.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your thoughtfulness and support. With its simpler vocabulary and content tailored for young readers, the book has been a game-changer, especially for English Language Learners and students with language-based learning challenges. Every student can now fully connect with Carlotta Walls LaNier's inspiring story and the historic events of desegregation at Central High School. By making the text more accessible, we've created an inclusive learning environment where all students can engage in meaningful discussions about justice, courage, and resilience.\r\n\r\nEven beyond the content, having brand-new books in their hands was exciting for the students! There's something special about fresh, modern copies that made them eager to dive into this story.
