For years, I have had my students compare scale diagrams of skulls from different Hominid species and ours. But I have always wanted to make this experience more real.\r\n\r\nYou can see three photographs of the skull reproductions that students will be comparing. Because they are physical, students can handle them, count the ratios of tooth types, and examine differences in cranial capacity, indicating a larger brain. We used these filters with our Vernier spirometers and our new Vernier LabQuest 3s. Collecting real data is so very engaging, particularly with the reliability, large screens, and functionality of these small computers. So far, our students have used them with probes for temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and spirometry.\r\n\r\nFor spirometry analysis, for example, students blow into one end of a spirometer, with a disposable filter for hygiene. The LabQuests are able to tell students the volume of air being inhaled and exhaled through the spirometer. From there, the students were able to calculate tidal volume, residual volume, and other measurements of lung capacity. Many of my students dream of working in the medical field, and they loved seeing their learning come to life. \r\n\r\nThese computers will be used in so many different ways, for so many years.
