Through this collection of books, students have opportunities to explore different cultures, learn about important historical figures, and discover stories that reflect experiences both similar to and different from their own. These texts support literacy skills such as building vocabulary, making inferences, asking thoughtful questions, and identifying themes, while also encouraging empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of identity and culture.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting parts of this project is seeing how naturally our students connect with stories and ideas beyond their own experiences. Our community libraries give students the opportunity to independently explore books that spark their curiosity, while our interactive bulletin boards bring learning into the hallways and encourage conversations throughout the school. Students can discover influential AAPI figures, learn about cultural traditions, and recognize the many contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Our students are curious, expressive, and eager to make connections, and these resources give them meaningful opportunities to ask questions, share perspectives, and learn from one another.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us build a more inclusive and culturally rich school community. Truly with your funding we were able to do what seemed initially impossible—taking 65 6th graders to one of the largest cities in the world for just one day! By the grace of God, this trip went absolutely beautifully! Students were split in 3 groups where they either explored the Met, participated in a Ballet class at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, or took a tour of the Lincoln Center and the New York Performing Arts library!\r\nStudents had a variety of new and fresh experiences—whether that meant trying new food, seeing art that is thousands of years old in person, or frolicking around Central Park! We knew it would be a special trip once we saw the skyline and kids began singing the chorus of Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z in union! We are so grateful for all the snacks and materials you provided that allowed us keep students free of hunger and safe!
