Students read independently, with partners, in small groups, and sometimes as a whole class. I love seeing students recommend books to one another, talk about their favorite characters, and become excited when they find a book they truly enjoy.\r\n\r\nThese books have been especially meaningful for students who may not always consider themselves strong or enthusiastic readers. When students find a book that matches their interests and reading level, their confidence grows. Some students have started reading more independently, while others are excited to share what they are reading with their classmates. Many commented on how sturdy they were and appreciated having a place to keep all of their work together instead of loose papers that often get lost. They immediately began decorating the covers to reflect their personalities, creating a sense of pride and ownership.\r\n\r\nAs we move through our Social Studies curriculum, these notebooks continue to grow into personalized learning journals. Having a real, elevated practice arena makes our classroom feel like a professional competition space. Year after year, the students will be building specific mission models to place on the table, trying to program their robots to navigate over, pick up, and sort objects. As they read, students work on understanding characters, figuring out the main idea, learning new vocabulary, and making predictions about what might happen next. Because the stories include a lot of dialogue and humor, students also practice reading with expression and improving their reading fluency.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom happens in different ways throughout the day. Sometimes we read together as a class, sometimes students read quietly on their own, and other times they read with a partner. During these times, many students choose books by Dan Gutman because they are fun and easy to stay interested in. Students often like to share their favorite funny moments with their classmates.\r\n\r\nSome students who were not always excited about reading are now reaching for these books during independent reading time. They enjoy the humor and feel proud when they finish a chapter or an entire book.
