Books like Pokémon, Stranger Things, and other illustrated stories have opened up new ways for our students to engage with reading. These texts have been a wonderful way to discuss skills such as identifying character development, analyzing visual storytelling, and understanding how words and images work together to create meaning. Students are also learning to make predictions, summarize plotlines, and compare how different artists and authors build suspense or emotion through illustration and dialogue.\r\nReading in our classroom now feels more like a shared adventure than an assignment. During independent reading time, you'll see students flipping pages with focus and excitement, sometimes quietly laughing or gasping at a plot twist.\r\n The graphic novel format has made literary discussions accessible to every type of reader, especially those who might have struggled to stay engaged with traditional texts.Several students who once called themselves \"non-readers\" are now some of our most eager participants. One student who was hesitant to pick up any book has completely fallen in love with the Stranger Things series. These new books have helped students see that reading can be dynamic, creative, and deeply personal. Your generosity hasn't just filled our shelves—it's inspired a community of young readers who see themselves reflected in the stories they love.","fullyFundedDate":1761242450547,"projectUrl":"project/growing-a-love-of-reading/9707034/","projectTitle":"Growing a Love of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Misla","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9611863_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722458579963","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9611863"},{"teacherId":9611863,"projectId":9707161,"letterContent":"When our new markers arrived, the classroom buzzed with excitement! My students were immediately drawn to the bright colors and couldn't wait to start using them. It was amazing to see how something as simple as a new set of markers could spark so much energy and motivation. We've been putting these markers to great use in our writing and literature lessons. Students have been using them to color-code their essays, highlighting thesis statements, topic sentences, and supporting evidence in different colors. This has made the editing process much more engaging and has helped students clearly see how their ideas are organized.\r\n We've also used the markers to create story maps that explore plot, character development, and theme. During our latest unit, students worked in groups to design story maps of retellings. The colorful story maps covered our classroom walls and became a source of pride and discussion for everyone.Students loved to look at everyones creativity. In the future we will be using the markers to prepare for our unit on Informational writing, where students will plan and draft their essays using a color coded process. Since receiving your donation of graphic novels, my students have been so much more engaged with the text! They are having great discussions and really putting together all of the components of this historical text in a meaningful way. The mix of the original text and the graphic novel has allowed visual learners a much easier outlet and way to access the text. Even students who are not naturally visual learners are understanding the text on a much deeper level by engaging with the characters and events in a new way.
