My students have been using their new sketchbooks, colorful printing inks, and a variety of printing tools to explore shape, texture, repetition, and pattern. During a recent project, students experimented with pressing different stamps into ink and creating repeated prints in their sketchbooks. They discovered that the same tool could produce very different results depending on how much ink they used, how hard they pressed, and how they arranged their shapes. Watching their pages develop from simple shapes and textures into playful compositions was a wonderful moment of artistic discovery.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were immediately eager to explore and create. They were especially excited to see the different colors of ink and the variety of tools available to them. Instead of simply drawing a shape, they were able to experience making an image through the process of printmaking. Their willingness to experiment, make adjustments, and try again when a print didn't turn out as expected was wonderful to see.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to build on these first experiments by creating more intentional compositions. Students will practice overlapping, repeating, rotating, and combining shapes and textures to create artwork with movement and visual interest. As they become more confident with the printmaking process, they will make their own decisions about color, placement, and pattern to create finished pieces that reflect their individual artistic ideas. We are spending this year learning about how we can solve problems through science, technology, engineering, and math through building models.
