Words cannot begin to express my gratitude. The students were thrilled when they saw all the boxes and tore into them like it was Christmas morning! (I had to remind them to be careful and that some of the stuff was fragile.) They were so excited to handle and explore all the materials, then to begin setting up the big aquarium. You would have thought there were little kids, not high schoolers, with the level of laughter of squeals of joy!\r\n\r\nWe had a 50-gallon fish tank donated by a fellow teacher last year. They knew our Homegrown Heroes Club had a smaller tank that we used for aquaponics. (Aquaponics is where you grow food plants on top of the aquarium so their roots can get nutrients from the water; in return, they clean the water and return oxygen to the water for the fish.) The materials allowed us to build an actual ecosystem inside the tank (substrate for aquatic plants to take root, rocks, hiding places for the fish, etc) as well as well as necessary requirements, such as cleaning tools, heater, fish food, and more. \r\n\r\nIt is important to have the aquarium set up and allow the aquatic plants to become established before adding any animals (fish, shrimp, snails, etc), otherwise the ecosystem of the tank can become unstable and collapse. This is why it took so long to write our letter and submit our 'thank you' package. But the kids have worked really. hard to get it going. All the aquatic plants are established and we have food plants along the top. We even have started to add our little organisms...beginning small with shrimps! \r\n\r\nWithout you, none of this would have been possible. Students earn points from teachers and staff for demonstrating positive behaviors, and they can exchange those points for snacks, school supplies, fidgets, and other incentives. The store has created a tangible way to recognize and celebrate students for making positive choices throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the Rewards Store set up, their reaction was immediate excitement and curiosity. Many had heard about the store since the beginning of the year, but some were unsure if it would actually happen. Once it became a reality, students eagerly asked questions about how it worked and what they could earn. This excitement helped increase awareness of the PBIS program across the building. It also empowered students to advocate for themselves by checking their points and engaging with teachers who may not have been consistently awarding them. For some students, it was especially meaningful to realize they had already been recognized more than they expected.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we plan to expand our PBIS efforts by incorporating school-wide events and raffles tied to student rewards. Our goal is to reach 100% staff participation and ensure that every student receives recognition at some point during the year. By shifting the focus from only addressing negative behaviors to actively recognizing positive ones, we aim to build a stronger school culture rooted in respect, responsibility, and integrity. While the Rewards Store provides extrinsic motivation, our long-term goal is to help students internalize these positive behaviors and develop intrinsic motivation that will carry beyond the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1765990169131,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-positive-choices-with-raiders/9946019/","projectTitle":"Empowering Positive Choices with Raiders Rewards","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mullins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10375162_orig.jpg?crop=107,107,x11,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1765291269811","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10375162"},{"teacherId":4625609,"projectId":9962110,"letterContent":"Students at Eleanor Roosevelt were delighted with the addition of the new lego sets. The absolute joy on their faces when I pulled out the boxes for them to choose which set to begin building. From freshman to seniors, there was not a difference in the happiness they expressed when the boxes came out.\r\nI think a lot of people make the assumptions about what students are interested in high school. The assumption is they are \"big kids\" now and don't play. However, I have found that high school students DO like to play and do need an outlet to de-stress. The lego sets provide them the opportunity to have a brain break, be collaborative with their friends, and build something from a million pieces. \r\nMany students drop by before classes start for the day to have a few minutes to build and set their minds in a positive mindset for the day. Many come at lunch to spend their 45 minutes for lunch in a relaxing way.\r\nI am so grateful for the generosity of the donors for helping to fund this project.","fullyFundedDate":1770230882069,"projectUrl":"project/media-center-innovation-hub-powered-by/9962110/","projectTitle":"Media Center Innovation Hub: Powered by LEGO","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tatro","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4625609_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1502763436847","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4625609"},{"teacherId":9715249,"projectId":9919886,"letterContent":"I want to thank you from the depths of my heart for your incredible generosity. Because of you, we now have a beautiful, colorful multifunctional digital clock that has already made such a positive impact in our classroom. Not only does it clearly display the time, but it also includes an alarm and a countdown timer—features we have been using constantly. The timer, in particular, has helped create smoother and more positive transitions between activities. Students are more focused and aware of how they're using their time. The remote control allows me to operate the clock from anywhere in the room, making it incredibly convenient during lessons. When the lights are dimmed, the vibrant colors shine even more brightly, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere for learning.\r\n\r\nThe two 25-foot extension cords have also been a tremendous help. They make it so much easier for students who are not seated near an outlet to plug in their devices and continue working without interruption. There is such appreciated convenience in being able to remain in one's seat to charge a Chromebook instead of having to relocate across the room. With the variety and number of plug types available, many students can charge at once, which has made our classroom more efficient and comfortable for everyone.\r\n\r\nYour kindness and support truly make a difference each and every day. This wasn't a standard project since it wasn't for classroom supplies. Rather, this project was to help us better organize a space called the Raider Family Closet, which is a donation center in our school where students in need can come to get supplies (ex: clothing, hygienic, school, etc) for them and their families. We didn't have a good way to organize all the types of supplies, resulting in a 'hot mess' (as one of my volunteers called it). But thanks to you, it is all neatly organized and easy to find specific items!\r\n\r\nOver half of our student population is on free/reduced lunch. Some of them are considered homeless. Others work jobs to help provide what little money they can just to provide food for their siblings. This closet is an essential resource for these students as it has the potential to provide supplies at no cost for them and their families. For example, the guidance counselor brought a student to my room at the end of the day this past winter. This student had no jacket on one of the coldest days. He said that he didn't own one. We allowed him to find one that fit him. Not only that, but he was also able to get a hat and gloves to go with it. I told him that, if he had siblings, we also had jackets for kids as well. He came back the next day with sizes for them. (I gave him jackets slightly larger for his siblings so they could grow into them a bit.)\r\n\r\nBut this is the whole point of the Raider Faimly Closet. It is a way for us to come together as a community to help each other. For some, there is a sense of shame or pride that might keep them from coming to visit the closet to receive supplies. However, if it is well-organized, then they can come in quickly to grab what they need and leave just as quickly. Less time there could be less embarrassing for them (not that needing help should be cause for embarrassment). We all need help some times and no one should feel ashamed by that. But the organization could make the need for help a little easier for students since they might feel more like they are shopping and less like they are sifting through someone else's 'leftovers.' \r\n\r\nSo, once again, from the very bottom of my heart... thank you! Thank you for helping to keep the Raider Family Closet neat and tidy in order to allow all of our students to have easy access!!!","fullyFundedDate":1746787351685,"projectUrl":"project/raider-family-closet-donation-center-p/9308164/","projectTitle":"Raider Family Closet - Donation Center Project","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Komar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7392137_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y504&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1596659026732","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kathryn-komar"},{"teacherId":7392137,"projectId":9061661,"letterContent":"Thank you once more for your very generous donation to our project! Because of you, we were able to successfully expand our aquarium and now have enough space for our growing snail family! Not only that, but this has enabled me to help students on multiple levels. \r\n\r\nFirst, it allows for my students to see firsthand how ecological relationships work. The different types of fish, snails, and plants all must exist together in their little ecosystem. We've had discussions surrounding them about competition, symbiosis, camouflage, adaptations, and more. We've also used them to discuss other biological topics, such as photosynthesis, reproduction, how snails feed (you can see them eating when they are on the glass!), gas exchange through gills, etc. They've really had a huge impact on my students' curiosity!\r\n\r\nSecond, my garden club is actually in charge of the aquarium. We use the tops of both aquariums for aquaponics. By adding a second aquarium, we are now able to expand our aquaponics program and try growing more herbs. Additionally, when we clean the tanks and change the water, we recycle the water by using it as fertilizer for the potted plants. More aquariums means more fertilized water to help nourish our little garden. \r\n\r\nFinally, the baby snails were given a small area to grow big and strong away from the fish. While they were growing, we held a Baby Snail adoption throughout the school. By providing information to the students, we opened up the opportunity for anyone who would like the chance to own one of these fascinating little critters (with parent permission, of course). The response was amazing! So many students were interested! Even if their parents wouldn't allow them to adopt a snail, they still came by my class to see the snails and learn more about them. It was truly wondrous to see this spark of curiosity run rampant through the school!\r\n\r\nThank you so much for all that you have done...for me, for my class, but especially for my students.
