Every year, during the letter writing unit, my students write a letter telling me how I can make the class better. Students write that I should have more Fun Friday activities, extra recess, snack since we are last lunch, change seating arrangements, etc. A couple of years ago, some students suggested I buy new stools for both my small group reading table and the intervention table because the stools I had were unbalanced and students often fell to the ground. I bought the stools the first year I started teaching, 20 years ago. I had planned on buying new stools for the past two summers, but every year I find other materials to buy for my class. Hence , no new stools. This year, one of my newer and younger colleagues suggested I complete a project on Donors Choose. She taught me how to create a project and here I am today with new stools! This year's students have no idea how lucky they are. Not one student has fallen...at least from sitting on unbalanced stools! Though this year's students do not understand the gift you have given, the fourth graders who visit me in the morning were happy to see that I took their suggestion seriously. Thanks to your generosity, that is exactly what we did. From day one, my students walked in and were filled with questions about everything they saw piled on the table. I excitedly told them about the kindness of all of you, and started to show them our new goodies. The best part was when I told my class that I finally heeded their request for a class pet and unveiled our \"pet\" jellyfish. (Which the students promptly decided to name \"Barney\" and \"Tim Cheese\"... don't ask!) \r\n Students are constantly asking to play with the puzzle, and I've played with students rack-o a few times during our free time. We've used the play-doh to review our reading vocabulary words, which you can see in one of the photos. The kids have never been more excited to show their understanding of vocabulary words! In math, my students eagerly come up to get their work checked so they can get a check mark with a smelly marker. All of these examples are just the beginning. \r\n The increased joy in the classroom with these materials is palpable. During science lessons, students light up as they watch animations about the water cycle, animal habitats, and other real-world phenomena. In reading, we use videos and quizzes to build vocabulary and strengthen comprehension skills. The animated format keeps everyone focused, and the interactive quizzes help me quickly check for understanding in a fun, low-stress way.\r\nThis project has helped me reach all types of learners — visual, auditory, and those who need a bit of extra support — while also challenging students who are ready for more. Now, those same students are able to channel their energy productively while remaining on task. The flexible seating has also encouraged more collaboration—students love gathering around the table on their stools to share ideas, work on projects, and help each other learn.\r\n\r\nIt's amazing to see how such a simple addition has created a sense of ownership and excitement about learning. Because of you, my second graders now have access to a wonderful set of Science of Reading phonetic readers. These books are already making a difference in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe new readers introduce key phonics skills, such as short and long vowels, blends, digraphs, and vowel teams, and give students the chance to apply those patterns in connected text. Instead of guessing at words or relying on pictures, my students are practicing how to decode accurately and confidently.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and joyful. In addition to whole class reading instruction where we review phonetic patterns, students also read with me in a group 4 times a week. They practice skills taught in their small group during independent reading and partner reading. The room is often filled with the hum of children reading quietly to themselves and each other.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who once felt discouraged about reading are now experiencing success. One child recently read an entire book aloud without any support and beamed with pride, while another—who used to avoid reading time—now eagerly races to choose his next story. These moments are building not just stronger skills, but lasting confidence and joy.\r\n\r\nYour gift has helped put the right books in my students' hands at just the right time.
