Yesterday we had our health lesson here at Butterfly Ridge Elementary School with our 5th grade classes. The girls and boys were divided into 2 classrooms. I stayed in the classroom with the girls for their presentation. I sent the boys deodorant to that classroom with the male counselor conducting their lesson. \r\n\r\nThe lesson included videos, discussion, and questions. As the video was describing puberty and changes that occur, we stopped the video after they spoke about hygiene. We showed the girls the deodorant they would each get and explained the difference between anti-perspirant and deodorant. \r\n\r\nThe lesson continued and we stopped the video again when it was explaining the menstrual cycle and feminine hygiene products. We opened a pad and explained how to use and how to properly dispose of this item. \r\n\r\nThe girls were very engaged and mature. I was very impressed with how this group of ladies conducted themselves during the lesson. As the lesson was concluding and we were answering questions, we gave each girl a stick a deodorant and a pad. I also left an entire pack of pads in each of the 4, 5th grade classrooms. The girls were instructed to ask their teacher or come to the health room if additional products are needed or if they have additional questions. \r\n\r\nThe girls were excited to get the items, after all, who doesn't like free stuff! As I looked around the classroom, I observed that some of the girls had never looked or touched a stick of deodorant before. We instructed them on how to turn the dial and to remove the plastic safety cap under the lid. We also explained the best times to apply deodorant.\r\n\r\nWe emphasized speaking with their trusted adult as these products are not one size fits all. The girls had many, very appropriate questions throughout the lesson. It was a great lesson that was definitely enhanced with your kind and generous donation.
