I think it's very important for middle school students to have access to dictionaries and thesauruses so they can improve their vocabularies, understand the origins of words in our language, and learn to use an important reference tool.\r\nThe kids all wanted to know what the boxes were as they arrived-- I let them sit for a day or two to to generate interest, then finally allowed the classes to unpack the boxes, which they thoroughly enjoyed.\r\nAll of my 7th grade students got to experience using these brand new dictionaries and thesauruses, and were excited to research the definitions of words in our new unit on space exploration. They were surprised to discover that some of the vocabulary words in our unit (like \"wonder\" and \"daring\") had more than one part of speech and this sparked some very interesting discussions in our classroom.\r\nI now have a permanent passive display where students can look up the meaning of a word related to our unit of students in their free time and give me the definition to earn a reward (PBIS points, a mechanical pencil, or an eraser). And now I am able to incorporate dictionary use into my regular lesson plans, thanks to your generous donation. My students have benefitted greatly from the availability of alternate seating/standing choices for completing their work. \r\nMiddle School is a tough age group for many reasons, not the least of which is that their bodies are changing and they aren't comfortable in the same position for very long. Being forced to sit for multiple hours during the day at tables and in chairs that aren't adjustable is uncomfortable for anyone--and on top of that, we expect them to sit still and be able to focus on the content we're teaching! Having alternatives for seating and standing is one way I can eliminate a barrier to learning.\r\nFrom the moment the boxes appeared in the room, the students were excited. I let them sit (the boxes) for a full day so every class period could experience the anticipation. Finally, on the second day, one of my classes finished our instruction a bit early and we tore into the boxes! They divided into three groups and helped me to assemble the three desks, following the printed directions, handing over parts and checking from one group to the next to make sure they were all assembling correctly. They double checked the height so they were all comfortable at the standing desks and agreed that these tables were amazing.\r\nNow each day, the students request at the beginning of the period to stand at one of the standing desks, or to work with a partner and share the space. I've used them as small group settings so we can all stand and look at shared resources. My students love having the option to stand, and we could not have done it without your donation!","fullyFundedDate":1765980762697,"projectUrl":"project/let-them-stand-so-they-can-deliver/9957727/","projectTitle":"Let Them Stand So They Can Deliver!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Suggs","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1145946"},{"teacherId":10333574,"projectId":9860449,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom. I am so sorry that this has taken me so long to write, it's been an incredibly busy school year and I have been navigating a few of my own health issues. \r\n\r\nThe resources you donated to us have supported projects including 3D bug sculptures, paper sculptures, and many different drawing assignments. My students were so relieved to have fresh materials to work with and explore. The fresh hot glue guns and gloves to prevent them from burning their hands with the hot glue were especially popular! \r\n\r\nThis semester we are working on creating more 3D projects with the materials that you donated as well as more drawing and painting projects. The pencil sharpener keeps our ideas bright and our lines sharp, while the cleaning spray helps keep the classroom smelling fresh and the desks nice and clean. Perhaps a fan favorite of the classroom restock were the pack of POSCA markers. Middle schoolers sure do love a paint pen so that they can customize everything in sight! \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generosity and support for my classroom.
