It's wonderful to have a classroom full of books that my sixth and eighth graders are excited to read. When students enter my classroom, they are happy to be here, genuinely enjoying the atmosphere that is created by all the vibrant, engaging books that surround us.\r\n\r\nBecause there are so many high interest texts in the classroom, students are excited to read, checking out books at a record pace. Later in the year, we'll engage in an independent reading unit, but right now, I have no independent reading requirement - students are reading because they're excited to, because they're spending an hour a day near texts that are compelling and engaging. I've even had to create sign up sheets for some books after students read them and then begin recommending them to their friends. \r\n\r\nI always consider one of my primary jobs in teaching English to be encouraging students to love literature, and it's so much easier when we have so many engaging texts at our fingertips. To give context, this is my second year teaching and this was the third fundraiser through DonorsChoose I have created. Looking back on pictures and experiences from my first year, there have been significant transformations in my practice and my classroom culture, much thanks to the items I have received through these fundraisers that I have been able to incorporate in my classroom.\r\n\r\nWith regards to the books, I have multiple students, particularly from 8th grade, that have taken interest in the bookshelf, and I believe that taking an interest is the first step in immersing in a practice, craft, or action. Much of these books delve into prominent historical figures, understanding social concepts like racism, identity, and history, and several picture books that illustrate these ideas through a different medium – all to inform readers about what makes these concepts and people significant in the greater fight in society towards equity.\r\n\r\nReading is a means to asking questions and learning more about the way of the world. This opens up conversations and allows readers to be critical. In my classroom, I seek to foster critical thinking by giving students space to take what they read and create meaning from it, incorporating new information to better inform their judgements, perspectives, and thoughts. I strive to these means through asking questions and incorporating real life examples.\r\n\r\nOverall, our bookshelf is breathing new life in our classroom and is progressively becoming a staple in the pursuit to a more positive learning environment. I appreciate, again, your generosity. Thank you!","fullyFundedDate":1746787183514,"projectUrl":"project/see-books-arent-that-bad/9236359/","projectTitle":"See? Your contribution is helping us bring creativity, collaboration, and the magic of live performance to life.\r\n\r\nBecause of donors like you, our actors now have access to more tools and resources they need to explore their imaginations, build confidence, and discover their voices on and off the stage. New lighting, costumes, make up supplies, costumes supplies, props, Imagination Station materials. We have a brand-new mini puppet stage for our puppet unit, along with a collection of funny props like wigs, mustaches, and basics all because of you. The cleaning supplies we need to keep our stage and theater classroom spotless and safe for everyone. A clean space might seem simple, but it makes a big difference—it helps us take pride in our environment, care for our materials, and create a welcoming atmosphere where creativity can shine. \r\n\r\nThis productions we have had this year shined so much more, from our Fall Production of Willy Wonka to our Talent Show and our current Spring Production The Wiz.
