When your gift arrived in August, it changed our classroom almost overnight. Because of you, we now have flexible seating, including stools, wobble stools, and cushions, as well as a calm down corner with a breathing cloud. I can't tell you how helpful it has been. It has been immeasurably helpful.\r\n\r\nReading time is now a favorite part of our day. During independent reading, students choose their own spot: some sit on a wobble stool, some sprawl out on a cushion with a book, and some curl up in a cozy corner. Wiggly learners can move while they focus, and every child gets to find the spot where reading feels comfortable. During read-alouds, students gather on the cushions, and last week, the whole class leaned in together as we read The Sit In, and you could have heard a pin drop.\r\n\r\nOur calm down corner has become a safe place for big feelings. When a student feels frustrated, worried, or overwhelmed, they can take a break there and practice deep breathing with our breathing cloud. After a few minutes, they return to class ready to learn. These tools are teaching students to notice their feelings and care for themselves, skills that help them become stronger readers and learners.\r\n\r\nWhen students walked in and saw the new seating, there were gasps, smiles, and a chorus of \"Can I sit there?\" The excitement was contagious, and they have taken wonderful care of everything. \r\n\r\nNow that our classroom routines are in place, we're diving into our CKLA lessons, math lessons, and more. With a comfortable, calm space to learn in, I can't wait to see how far they soar.\r\n\r\nYour generosity gave our students a classroom where they feel comfortable, supported, and excited to learn. Thank you for believing in them.","fullyFundedDate":1787265895352,"projectUrl":"project/comfort-community-creating-a-space-fo/10354516/","projectTitle":"Comfort + Community: Creating a Space for Our RKE Rockets","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Julie Heltsley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10533960_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y208&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1781741600637","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-heltsley"},{"teacherId":10533960,"projectId":10343247,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our reading rockets have officially lifted off! Because of you, our classroom now has nearly one hundred brand-new books, including so many favorites, and our readers have been exploring new worlds every single day. We are so grateful.\r\n\r\nBecause you love books, you'll appreciate that these texts are doing more than just filling our shelves. They are helping us teach real reading skills, including:\r\n\r\nMaking predictions and inferences - Students pause mid-story to ask, \"What do I think will happen, and what clues made me think so?\"\r\nUnderstanding characters - We talk about why characters make their choices and how they change.\r\nBuilding vocabulary - New words come alive in context, and students are proudly using them in conversation and writing.\r\nRetelling and finding the main idea - Students practice summarizing in their own words, with details to back up their thinking.\r\nConnecting to the text - Students link stories to their own lives, other books, and the world around them. \r\n\r\nEvery day, our room hums with the sound of reading. We begin with a read-aloud, where I model how strong readers think, and then students move into partner or independent reading. During independent time, students choose books that interest them, and I meet with small groups to practice skills at just the right level. We close with sharing time, when students tell classmates about their favorite page, funny character, or biggest surprise. Your gift has made a difference for individual students. \r\n\r\nThis is exactly what we hoped for when we set out to launch our rockets toward a lifelong love of reading. A child who loves reading becomes a student who loves learning, and you helped make that possible.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1782407929732,"projectUrl":"project/launching-our-rockets-toward-a-life-long/10343247/","projectTitle":"Launching our Rockets Toward a Life Long Love of Reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Julie Heltsley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10533960_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y208&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1781741600637","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-heltsley"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64192","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":396,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":47,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":46,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":37,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.1,"schoolId":64192,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Rolling Knolls Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Rolling Knolls Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/anne-arundel-county-public-schools/rolling-knolls-elementary-school/64192"}
