From the beginning, students were highly motivated, earning the opportunity to build both raised garden beds by completing their work and demonstrating school-appropriate behavior. This created a strong connection between responsibility, effort, and reward.\r\nWhile constructing the garden beds, students practiced reading and math skills by following directions, measuring materials, and organizing steps in the building process. They also developed important executive functioning skills such as planning a multistep project, problem-solving, teamwork, and frustration tolerance when tasks became challenging.\r\nOnce the beds were built, students used the dirt, peat pots, and gardening tools to plant a variety of seeds. This expanded their science knowledge as they learned about different vegetables, seed germination, sprouting timelines, sun exposure, and water needs based on the plants they selected. Students became active investigators by collecting data on plant growth, development, and changes over time.\r\nThe project also created leadership opportunities. Two students proudly took on the role of \"horticulturists\" for the Glendale garden, monitoring the overall health and care of the garden and helping build ownership, confidence, and responsibility.\r\nThe excitement surrounding these donations was remarkable. When students saw the materials arrive, they were eager to begin immediately. Many asked every morning when they would get to work in the garden, and several even chose to give up part of their recess time just to continue planting, building, and caring for their projects. Their enthusiasm showed how deeply engaged and invested they became in this learning experience.\r\nMost importantly, these donations gave students a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and self-sufficiency. They now have gardening knowledge they can take home over summer break to continue growing plants with their families. They will also begin the next school year with the confidence and skills needed to plant and care for fall vegetables, allowing this project to continue making an impact long after the initial donation.
