When the materials arrived and we opened the boxes to reveal and sort the contents my student's were all smiles. We organized the supplies I explained the purpose behind each piece of equipment.\r\n\r\nStarting off, we began by discussing the potential value in learning to hand-stitch - fixing torn shirts, sewing buttons, and creating what comes from the imagination. Quickly, my group began to see the importance in learning the skill. Little did they know that one of the greatest gifts of sewing is the downtime and space it can create for focus and connection with others.\r\n\r\nOver the course of a month, my students went from struggling to thread a needle to cutting templates to create their own wallets/coin purses and pillows. It was wonderful to see them problem solve throughout and show off their creations with others. At times, the room was quiet with focus and other times, full with silly discussion and sharing as needles pushed through fabric.\r\n\r\nI am certain that this project has provided a lasting experience and an important skill set for my students as they move forward into adulthood. From all of us here in my school, thank you for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1738763117536,"projectUrl":"project/put-down-the-phone-lets-stitch-and-sew/9092362/","projectTitle":"Put Down the Phone, Let's Stitch and Sew","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Pike","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9914159"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65453","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":237,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":33,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":89,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"8.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":74.5,"schoolId":65453,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wiscasset Middle High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wiscasset Middle High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maine/wiscasset-school-department/wiscasset-high-school/65453"}
