I recently presented the idea to our middle school students, and I already have TOO MANY students interested in participating, which is a pretty great problem to have. Their eyes lit up when they saw all of the instruments and heard that they could actually learn to play one and be part of a band. That reaction alone has made me even more excited for this project to begin!\r\n\r\nThe resources from this project will give students the chance to learn instruments, rehearse songs, and work together as an actual band. Along the way, they will also be building confidence, teamwork, communication, perseverance, responsibility, and a sense of belonging. For some students, this may be their first time ever holding an instrument or imagining themselves performing in front of others, and I cannot wait to see what they discover they are capable of.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are selecting the group, assigning instruments and roles, and preparing for rehearsals to begin in January. From there, students will spend several months learning songs, working through challenges together, and preparing for a final showcase in April. There is so much interest in learning this instrument it is overwhelming. \r\nMy students were amazed when they saw them in my classroom amongst all my other new instruments for this school year. The impact of this project will bring forth results in not just music but also subjects like math, social studies and history as I teach the instrument I will also be teaching about time periods of the music we work on to introduce the students to different styles of music. \r\nI am currently looking into curriculum that will work well for the grades 3-5 age group which was the focus of this project. These stories give my kids real language for what is happening inside of them. We talk about naming emotions, noticing how they show up in our bodies, and figuring out what to do with them instead of just reacting. For many of my younger students, this is the first time they are being directly taught that feelings are normal and manageable. We practice calming strategies and problem solving together, and I am already seeing them use that language outside of my room.\r\n\r\nReading in my space looks like sitting in a circle on the rug, pausing often, and letting kids share their own connections. We stop to talk about what the character is feeling and what they could do differently, and sometimes we practice the coping skills right there together. It is interactive and honest and sometimes a little loud, but it is real learning. A few of my students who struggle most with big emotions are the first to engage with these books, and I have watched them start to say they need a minute or that their \"angry spot\" is getting too big. That kind of awareness at this age is huge.
