The sensory rain tubes have been especially exciting because they give students something calming and hands-on to focus on when they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or distracted. The light therapy lamp also helps create a warm, soothing environment in my counseling space where students can take a break, regulate their emotions, and return to the classroom feeling more prepared to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, they were immediately curious and excited to try them. We talked about how these tools are not toys, but resources they can use when their brains or bodies need help calming down. It has been wonderful to see students begin to recognize when they need a break and choose a strategy that works for them.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue teaching students how to recognize their own signs of stress and choose appropriate strategies for self-regulation. We will practice using the sensory tools alongside breathing, movement, positive self-talk, and other calming strategies.
