Through engaging series like Harry Potter, The Wild Robot, and the Who Is/Who Was biographies, students are practicing comprehension, vocabulary development, making predictions, identifying character traits, and understanding themes and problem-solving within stories. The STEM and biography collections also introduce students to nonfiction reading skills such as identifying main ideas, using text features, and learning how real people overcame challenges to make important contributions to the world.\r\n\r\nThe Little SPOT of Emotion books have become especially valuable for teaching social-emotional learning. These stories help students recognize emotions, build self-awareness, and develop strategies for handling feelings like anxiety, anger, and frustration. These lessons support positive classroom relationships and help students become more confident learners.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks active, engaging, and student-centered. Students participate in independent reading, partner reading, small-group discussions, and read-alouds throughout the day. One of the most exciting parts of adding these new books is seeing students eagerly recommend titles to one another and talk about characters and stories during transitions and free reading time. Students love having choices that match both their interests and reading levels, which helps build motivation and confidence.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were previously hesitant readers are now reaching for books independently and asking for extra reading time. The Harry Potter series has captured the attention of many students who enjoy adventure and fantasy, while The Wild Robot books have sparked thoughtful conversations about friendship, survival, and kindness. Students who enjoy nonfiction have been especially excited about the biography collections, often sharing interesting facts they learned with classmates. The diverse book collections also help students see themselves, their interests, and different cultures represented in our classroom library, making reading feel more meaningful and personal for everyone.","fullyFundedDate":1777640350113,"projectUrl":"project/play-read-and-thriveeven-indoors/10011522/","projectTitle":"Play, Read, and Thrive—Even Indoors","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Eaton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10251943"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65644","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":195,"numTeachers":18,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":100,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":69.3,"schoolId":65644,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Searsport Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Searsport Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maine/rsu-20/searsport-elementary-school/65644"}
