Just having such a new, nice piece of technology (that lights up!) has encouraged my students to be more engaged with the material. With this funding we were able to get 10 Micro:bits, connecting cords, and rechargable batteries. This is a huge improvement to our classroom.\r\n\r\nWith these Micro:bits, students can now explore how code can work with physical real world sensors, inputs and outputs. Students are now able to get two Micro:bits to \"talk\" to each other. If you push a button on one, it will beep or display a message on another. If you write the code properly, it could alert you of a change in temperature or sound volume. If can detect if the device is shaken, dropped or tilted and trigger some effect like a sound or song. We have even attached small motors to make them more interactive. \r\n\r\nMy class has been planning a \"Spooky Halloween\" event. They are designing and coding experiences that have different triggers and effects. For example, one student has a plastic dinosaur on a motor attacking a human action figure. When someone makes a noise near the display, the motor turns on, lifting and dropping the dinosaur into place on top of the human. Other students triggered their displays with a second Micro:bit to act like a remote, lowering a ghost when a button is pressed from around the corner in the hallway, hopefully \"spooking\" the observer. \r\n\r\nYour donations have allowed Computer Science and programming to be an more concrete and hands on skill that is less intimidating to students. It was a simple gesture, but it had a powerful impact on their ability to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the snack cabinet stocked, their reactions were filled with gratitude and excitement. Many immediately said, \"Thank you!\" while others expressed relief knowing there would be something available if they needed it.
