Seeing them with the saddest face when they realize they do not have a snack is the worst feeling you can imagine. Then when they come to me to explain that they are hungry I feel terrible when I do not have anything for them to eat. By creating this project I was able to keep snacks for a couple of months for them to fall back on when their families could not afford snacks for them to bring. \r\n\r\nWhen my students saw me open the box of snacks they were beyond excited! They wanted to know every detail of how I was able to make it happen for our classroom. I explained the best I could to 5 and 6 year old's how some of the kindest people bought them so that they would have a snack to eat so they didn't get hungry. So many of them said thank you immediately! The next steps for our classroom is to keep pushing forward in our education and keeping our safe and positive environment that we call home.","fullyFundedDate":1757348190286,"projectUrl":"project/safe-and-positive-dragon-den/9612413/","projectTitle":"Safe and Positive Dragon Den","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McCarthy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10182685"},{"teacherId":2433604,"projectId":9642877,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom and for providing us with access to Scholastic News. These weekly magazines have made a remarkable difference in our reading instruction and in the excitement my first graders feel about learning.\r\n\r\nThe new texts introduce important early literacy skills that are essential for young readers. With each issue, my students practice nonfiction comprehension strategies such as identifying the main idea, using text features (headings, captions, diagrams), learning new vocabulary through context, and asking and answering questions about key details. The magazine format allows them to experience authentic informational text in a way that feels inviting and accessible. We also use the issues to build background knowledge, make predictions, and connect what we read to our own lives—all critical components of strong reading development.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, joyful, and hands-on. Students work in small groups, partner-read, highlight important information, and participate in guided discussions. We pause to look closely at photographs, talk about nonfiction text features, and practice reading aloud with fluency. For many of my students, having their own copy of Scholastic News makes them feel like real readers with real materials—not just worksheets or textbook pages. They love that they can touch, annotate, and revisit the pages whenever they want.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have particularly blossomed since receiving these magazines. One of my reluctant readers now eagerly asks, \"Is it a Scholastic News day?\" because the topics feel interesting and manageable for him. Another student who usually struggles with comprehension lights up when she can point to a picture and explain what she learned—something she feels confident doing with these texts. Several students take their magazines home to share with family members, excited to read the articles again and show what they have learned.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has brought real-world reading into our classroom and created meaningful moments of confidence, curiosity, and discovery. Our new small group table has become the place where so much learning and connection happen each day. My students feel so special sitting around it with me, and having a designated space has made our instruction smoother, more focused, and so much more enjoyable for them.\r\n\r\nWe've already used the table for so many hands-on activities that the kids get excited about the moment they walk in the room. They've written letters and words in shaving cream (and giggled nonstop while doing it!), built high-frequency words out of playdough, and created alphabet rainbow arcs to practice letter order and sound relationships. These activities used to be hard to manage in our old setup—but now we have the perfect space to make them happen.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has had a real, daily impact on my students.
