Although we are only at the beginning of the school year, we have already seen just how much of a difference this space can make.\r\n\r\nWithin the first few weeks of school, we have already identified so many students who need additional support with regulating their emotions, managing big feelings, coping with frustration, and returning to a calm state so they can continue learning. Having a dedicated sensory space gives these students somewhere safe and supportive to go when they need a break and allows them to practice skills that they can eventually use independently.\r\n\r\nFor some of our students, the sensory room provides a chance to step away from the overwhelming parts of the school day, calm their bodies, and reset. For others, it provides an opportunity to learn and practice coping strategies with an adult before returning to the classroom. These moments may seem small, but they can completely change the course of a student's day.\r\n\r\nWe are already seeing students benefit from having access to sensory tools, calming activities, movement opportunities, and a quiet space. Instead of simply telling a student to \"calm down,\" we can provide them with tools and strategies that actually teach them how to calm their bodies and manage their emotions.\r\n\r\nThe impact also reaches our classrooms and teachers. When students have a safe place to regulate and learn coping skills, they are better prepared to return to the classroom ready to participate and learn. Our teachers now have another resource they can use to support students who may otherwise struggle to remain successful in the classroom environment.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this room communicates something powerful to our students: their feelings matter, their needs matter, and we believe in their ability to be successful.\r\n\r\nWe know that this is only the beginning. As the school year continues, we expect even more students to benefit from this resource. We are excited to continue building the sensory room and expanding the tools and opportunities available to our students.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our students and for investing in their success. Your generosity has given us more than supplies and a physical space. You have helped us create a place where students can feel safe, learn how to regulate, develop coping skills, and return to their day feeling ready to try again.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us make a difference, one student and one calm moment at a time.","fullyFundedDate":1777813769871,"projectUrl":"project/from-overwhelmed-to-empowered-a-sensory/10173136/","projectTitle":"From Overwhelmed to Empowered: A Sensory Room for FES","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bethany","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10471709"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_17305","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":404,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":33,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"4 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"16.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":62.5,"schoolId":17305,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Franklinton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Franklinton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/louisiana/washington-parish-school-district/franklinton-elementary-school/17305"}
