I use the escape room materials as a hands-on review the day before a unit test. Students work in small groups to solve chemistry-related puzzles, apply what they have learned throughout the unit, and use their answers to unlock a series of different locks on their escape room case. Instead of simply completing a traditional review worksheet, students have to communicate, problem-solve, check their work, and apply their chemistry knowledge in order to move forward. It has been exciting to see students become so invested in solving the puzzles and celebrating when they finally unlock the case.\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were definitely intrigued! There was a little bit of hesitation because they weren't sure what to expect, but that quickly turned into excitement once they realized they were actually going to be solving puzzles and opening locks. Even students who don't always get excited about traditional review activities were eager to participate because the escape room gave them a reason to work together and persevere when they got stuck.\r\nMy next step is to continue building on the hands-on aspect of these escape rooms and make them an ongoing part of my chemistry classroom. As I use them with my students, I am learning from their reactions and problem-solving approaches how to write better clues, create more effective puzzles, and organize the materials so the escape rooms can be reused for years to come. My goal is to continue creating experiences that make students actively use their chemistry knowledge rather than simply recall it—and to build a collection of reusable escape rooms that students will look forward to throughout the year. More importantly, I want to challenge my students to think critically, work through problems that may not have an immediately obvious answer, and learn that being stuck is not the same thing as being unable to succeed. I hope these experiences help them develop the confidence and persistence to keep working when things get difficult.","fullyFundedDate":1783529730744,"projectUrl":"project/unlocking-critical-thinking-through-scie/10348062/","projectTitle":"Unlocking Critical Thinking Through Science Escape Rooms","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ryan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9829457_orig.png?crop=2292,2292,x0,y320&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1782485573967","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-ryan-404"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_9172","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1505,"numTeachers":78,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":22,"percentWhite":59,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":68.9,"schoolId":9172,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Northshore High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Northshore High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/louisiana/st-tammany-parish-school-district/northshore-high-school/9172"}
