I teach English Language Arts and reading to middle school students at a Title 1 school. The purpose of my project, \"creativity in the classroom,\" was to help to ensure my students remain engaged in class. I have several students who do not thoroughly enjoy reading and I wanted them to be able to demonstrate their learning by doing more than simply reading and answering questions. So far, we have utilized our materials to create anchor charts, literary one-pagers, and students created plot diagrams to demonstrate understanding of story elements on construction paper. \r\n\r\nThe first thing that students noticed arrived were the snacks for the classroom. Many students were most excited to see that we received treats. The treats were placed in the \"prize box\" and students are awarded treats after we play review games, or simply for participating in class. I asked for this for extrinsic motivation. Our school does have a large population of students in visual and performing arts. When students discovered that we received brand new coloring utensils, construction paper, anchor chart paper, etc., they were excited to be able to create new things in class. I had some crayons and colored pencils, but unfortunately, a lot were broken or in poor condition. To see the large box of crayons especially, they were extremely happy and thankful. When students saw that we also got new headphones, it was also a treat for them. I have a few students with read aloud accommodations, so they were thrilled to see that we had gotten some in some new fun colors and they actually work. \r\n\r\nMy students and I are so extremely thankful for the contribution to our classroom. It makes my heart smile knowing that they are able to use these items and really become immersed in learning. The impact that you have had on us through your donation is immeasurable.","fullyFundedDate":1726891926117,"projectUrl":"project/creativity-in-the-ela-classroom/8695876/","projectTitle":"Creativity in the ELA classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Levy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9671538_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723679440838","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9671538"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_17009","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":633,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":85,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":61.9,"schoolId":17009,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about McKinley Magnet Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"McKinley Magnet Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/louisiana/east-baton-rouge-parish-public-schools/mckinley-magnet-middle-school/17009"}
