Our kindergarten students have been working hard to learn letters and sounds as well as isolating letter sounds in words. They have used the alphabet tubs to name the objects (which has expanded vocabulary) and make the sound they hear at the beginning of the word when naming each object. \r\nThey have created a game called \"Alphabet Soup\" with the miniature figures and tubs. They place all of the objects into a common bowl (to make the soup) and take turns choosing items from the common bowl, naming the object, isolating the initial sound, and matching it to the individual bowls with corresponding letters. We will use the magnetic money as we learn the names of coins and their values. The number paths will be used to further develop fact fluency and determining and comparing number values. They are eager to use the materials at every opportunity offered to them. My kindergarten students are benefiting particularly from the message maker buttons as they are currently being used as directions for independent learning centers. If the student forgets the directions for an activity, they simply press the button for a repeat. It lessens the\"off task\" times because the use the button and get right back to work. \r\nThe rainbow visual timer has also been critical for efficiency. Most kindergarten students don't yet know how to tell time or even concepts of time intervals like \"10 minutes\" but this visual representation of time is meaningful to them. They can see in a non-standard measure for them how much time remains in a task.
