Because many of my students are reading far below grade level, it can be difficult to keep them motivated and engaged with longer or more traditional texts. The addition of graphic novels and high-interest visual books has given us the chance to introduce important reading skills, such as sequencing, identifying main ideas, analyzing character motivation, and connecting text to images, in a way that feels approachable and exciting for them. These books allow us to teach the same literacy strategies we would use with more advanced texts but with scaffolding that matches students' current abilities. For example, students are practicing inferencing by interpreting images alongside words, and they are building vocabulary by encountering new terms in meaningful, illustrated contexts.\r\n\r\nIndependent reading time in our classroom has become one of the most joyful parts of the day. Students now look forward to choosing from a wider variety of books that truly reflect their interests. Some are diving into fantasy series, others are connecting with realistic stories, and many are proud to finish a book cover-to-cover for the first time in a long time. One student who often avoided reading now rushes to grab the newest graphic novel when class begins, while another who has struggled with decoding has gained confidence by tackling shorter, visually rich texts. These moments are not only helping them improve fluency and comprehension but also building their sense of identity as readers. Thanks to your generosity, our classroom library is now a place where students see themselves, their interests, and their growth reflected every day.\r\n\r\nOne of my students, Marcus, had never finished a book before this year and often put his head down during reading time. When the new graphic novels arrived, he picked up \"Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief\" and didn't put it down for the entire period. The combination of familiar characters, fast-paced action, and supportive visuals gave him the confidence to stick with the story. Within a week, he had not only finished the book but was also recommending it to his classmates. Another student, Aaliyah, who usually struggles with comprehension questions, has been using the images in her chosen novel to support her understanding of the plot. She has started volunteering answers during class discussions, something she rarely did before. These individual successes highlight how powerful it is when students have access to books that meet them where they are and reflect what they love.\r\n\r\nThank you for providing my students with this opportunity!","fullyFundedDate":1746785886989,"projectUrl":"project/literacy-for-all/9286954/","projectTitle":"Literacy for All","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dean","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9497460_orig.png?crop=828,827,x0,y770&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1711466788914","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9497460"},{"teacherId":9818728,"projectId":8907882,"letterContent":"Your gift of flexible seating has transformed our special education classroom!
