Many of them couldn't believe that someone would care about them in this way. Some students struggle with being motivated in school and this project helped give them something to look forward to. \r\n\r\nOur Estill County Middle School Art students just completed their first yarn project. They spent about a week making 6 X 10 inch wall hangings inspired by Navajo chiefs' striped woven blankets. I showed them a special one from 1840-1860 highlighted on Antique's Roadshow. Students were puzzled that a blanket could be worth so much money but learned quickly that a well done piece of rare woven art could be a national treasure. \r\n\r\nMost students loved every minute of the project and couldn't wait to take their weaving home. And, some students even proudly allowed me to feature their weavings in our Spring Parent & Teacher Conference Night art display. \r\n\r\nIn addition to the weavings, most students learned to make yarn pom poms and some students finished early and had time to complete woven pot holders that they took home.
