It is my belief that feeding hungry at-risk students has the potential to be transformational in my Literacy class. \r\nWhat I am doing: My class starts off with each student reading independently for 15 minutes. Nearly every day, I can get nearly 100% engagement. Every student in both of my classes today did the reading. That success builds momentum. It is true that I have written a lot of grants to get high-interest low-level graphic novels for my students, and having good books helps enormously with motivation. The snacks that are going to be provided will be used to continue to build relationships, rewards for consistency and performance and also as prizes for participating in team-building activities. With food, I can \"bribe\" convince students to do things they would not otherwise do. \r\n\r\nAfter reading, students work independently on a computer application that is designed to improve literacy. I also use food to reward progress in the computer application. When students finish a segment, they get a bag of chips. Student are required to complete five segments a semester. \r\n\r\nLast year I had some of the highest literacy gains in our school district. That progress is a source of pride for me. My focus is NOT receiving praise or awards, I want to help students become better readers and change their lives, allow them to have some success in my class – and acknowledge and reward their progress. \r\n\r\nYour generous contribution allows this relationship to flourish and makes my class different from other classes. I believe my students know that I care about them and with your contribution they will know that other people care as well! My students have already been making use of the daily classroom supplies, and enjoying having brand new markers and items that work perfectly! Especially some of my students with autism who want their creative artwork to look a certain way, where older markers may streak or simply not color as neatly.\r\nWith starting a new year and increasing our program size (usually we have 5-6 new freshmen, this year we are at 10 and have had 2 other grade level students move in to our district as well!), the headphones have been greatly received to help students who are becoming overstimulated by all of the noise!\r\nThe biggest hit has been the beanbag! It has been enjoyed by many within my calm down corner- both for self-regulation purposes and for self-selected free choice time after work has been completed! It is used multiple times a day!\r\nI am forever thankful to all who donated to help our classroom get these much needed supplies!
