As we read together, students practice close reading, identifying themes, analyzing characters, and making connections between the story and their lives. We also focus on vocabulary development, writing responses to literature, and discussing how culture and identity shape a person's experiences. This book has facilitated discussions on perseverance, education, and family expectations. \r\n\r\nSeveral students have already connected strongly with the story. Some of my students have told me they see parts of their own families and experiences reflected in the book.\r\n\r\nYour support did more than provide books—it gave my students the opportunity to see themselves in literature, build critical reading skills, and develop a deeper love for learning. We just finished using the 3D printing materials to culminate my students' review of lines of symmetry and fractions of a circle. Reviewing skills with fractions and degrees of a circle can sometimes be a very dry unit. However, this year we were able to practice and apply those skills to 3D print snowflakes. \r\n\r\nMy students were so motivated by being able to immediately apply their math learning to our snowflake project. One of my most reluctant students actually asked to come in and work on his design during recess. Students individually planned out their snowflake designs using degree measurements and lines of symmetry and then built them using a digital design platform called TinkerCad. They were then able to choose which plastic filament they would like to print their snowflake and then take it home before our Winter break. The glow in the dark filament was an especially huge hit!\r\n\r\nThis spring I am planning on using the robots to practice ratios and geometry skills with my students. I am confident they will also be wonderful tools for my students to use to build their Math and problem solving skills!
