Our E-Note Store is a positive incentive store where students can earn E-Notes by showing kindness, working hard, making good choices, helping others, and following our school expectations. They can then use their E-Notes to \"shop\" for fun items and rewards.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw all of the new items in the store, they were SO excited! They immediately started looking at what they wanted to save their E-Notes for. It was fun to hear them talking about their goals and figuring out how many E-Notes they needed to earn. What may seem like a small prize to an adult can be a really big deal to a middle school student!\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts has been watching students make the connection between their positive choices and earning something they really want. The store gives us another opportunity to recognize students who are doing the right thing, including those quiet students who may not always get noticed.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using the E-Note Store throughout the school year as part of our schoolwide positive behavior program. Students will continue earning E-Notes, setting goals, saving, and shopping throughout the year. Teachers now join the space frequently for lunch, taking a break from our day. What you created is more than seating—it's a shared space for connection, calm, and joy.\r\n\r\nThis spring, your timing couldn't have been more meaningful. My 8th graders completed three consecutive weeks of state testing, and the mental load was heavy. But thanks to you, we had a place to step outside and reset.\r\n\r\nAnd what happened next wasn't something I planned—it happened organically.\r\n\r\nStudents sprawled out into the grass and outdoor areas, racing to see who could get to the bridge first. They searched for the perfect wish dandelion, cautiously touched and held caterpillars for the first time, and discovered crawfish and frogs with excitement and pride. They wrote and collected items in nature journals, played with sticks, and gathered small bouquets of wildflowers. At one point, students were surprised to find their hands stained bright yellow after drawing on the sidewalk with dandelions—a small but memorable moment of discovery.\r\n\r\nKids rediscovered games like stick ball, and even practiced \"tested gravity.\" My students even convinced me to attempt a cartwheel for the first time in decades.\r\n\r\nAs I watched them one morning, I wrote in my own nature journal:\r\n\"A cacophony of joy and smiles.\"\r\nThat's what this space has become.\r\n\r\nWhat's been most powerful is how naturally learning has happened outside. Without planning it, our time outdoors led to conversations about weathering and erosion, pollinators, weather patterns, and even language exploration with my ESOL students. Being outside invited curiosity, and students began asking questions and making connections on their own.\r\n\r\nAlongside these organic moments, we've also started to intentionally use the space for structured learning activities, like a Morse code translation challenge, and plans for an outdoor note scavenger hunt and Newton's Forces Field Day in the near future.\r\n\r\nStudents now beg to go outside—and because of you, I can often say yes. We've been able to take learning outdoors 2–3 times a week, blending movement, creativity, and academic thinking in a way that feels natural and engaging. Middle schoolers learn best when science is hands-on, visual, and full of curiosity and because of your generosity, my students experienced exactly that. With these resources, they discovered that science isn't just something we read about in a textbook. It's alive, exciting, messy, surprising, and all around us.\r\n\r\nWe LOVED, LOVED diving into oobleck. The day was full of chaotic joy as students eagerly got their hands dirty exploring solids, liquids, and gases. I was so caught up in their excitement that I forgot to take pictures! We kicked off the lesson by creating a kindergarten-friendly definition of a solid, then challenged students to create a blob sturdy enough to toss back and forth, but still melty enough to ooze through their fingers. Afterwards, we circled back to our definitions, tried to classify this strange non-Newtonian substance, and even showcased real world applications like temporary pothole repairs or temporary speed bumps.\r\n\r\nOur dry ice exploration was another huge hit. Students were mesmerized as they observed sublimation in real time—watching solid carbon dioxide transform directly into gas. We explored deposition as frost formed on surfaces and even examined crystalization patterns. These demonstrations helped students make deep connections to phase changes and built a strong conceptual foundation using unforgettable visual examples.\r\n\r\nThe nylon formation demo sparked incredible discussions about materials engineering. Seeing polymer chains form instantly led students to ask questions about manufacturing, industrial chemistry, and the everyday objects made from these reactions.\r\n\r\nWe also investigated salol crystal formation allowing students to observe freezing, nucleation, and crystal growth under the microscope. These moments helped them better understand the transformations matter undergoes and that things can freeze at room temperature. \r\n\r\nThe nitinol memory metal demonstration captured everyone's imagination. Students were amazed by how the wire remembered its shape when heated and loved discussing potential energy, engineering applications, and how memory metals appear in real-world technologies.\r\n\r\nTo prepare for our energy transfer balls and thermite demonstration, we conducted a chemistry experiment comparing rust formation using salt water vs hydrogen peroxide. Once we built up the perfect layer of rust, we performed our controlled thermite reaction—an unforgettable illustration of oxidation, energy transfer, and the dramatic power of chemical change.\r\n\r\nFinally, the classroom headphones have already made a tremendous difference. Students now engage with interactive labs, videos, digital notes, and simulations without relying on personal devices, creating a more focused and accessible learning environment for everyone.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in hands-on science education and for giving my students these memorable, meaningful experiences. Not all our layers behaved as predicted because of additives changing density, forcing us to experiment, calculate, and adjust. Students tested and measured the densities of each liquid and several objects to see which would float, sink, or suspend in each layer.\r\n\r\nThe result was a tower that became more than just a visual — it's a daily reminder of how scientific inquiry really works. Students observed, revised, hypothesized, and tested and overcame even in the face of adversity when our layers didn't layer perfectly. They connected these lessons to STEM careers like chemical, mechanical, and petroleum engineering, where understanding fluids and density is critical in designing everything from pipelines to submarines.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, our classroom now proudly displays a mesmerizing eight-layer tower that captures the beauty and challenge of real-world science. It's a centerpiece that continues to spark curiosity, discussion, and pride every day.\r\n\r\nAnd science doesn't stop there — this project prompted even more questions and curiosity.
