My students have been able to use the art supplies for crafts and creative activities that give them an opportunity to practice their fine motor skills in a fun and engaging way. Several of my students struggle with fine motor tasks, and crafts allow them to work on those skills without the frustration that can sometimes come with traditional practice. Instead, they are excited to create, and they often don't even realize how much they are practicing along the way. Their excitement when they see new materials and get to choose what they want to create has made these activities especially meaningful.\r\n\r\nOne of the most special impacts has been with a new student who communicates very little as a result of the trauma he has experienced. We have discovered that crafting gives him a comfortable way to express himself and has helped us learn more about his interests and the things he enjoys. Watching him engage with the materials and make choices about his creations has given us opportunities to connect with him in ways that we may not have otherwise had. Before this project, I often had to purchase art supplies out of my own pocket, which meant crafts were few and far between. Thanks to our donors, we can now incorporate creative activities into our classroom much more regularly without worrying about the financial cost. My students were incredibly excited when they saw the boxes of new activities arriving. They love to learn and explore and that is exactly what these new resources are doing for our classroom. \r\nMy students have been able to use the magnetic building blocks to build bridges, castles, houses, and even make an escape plan with them in case of a house fire. \r\nThe new math games in the tin containers are a favorite, because they LOVE anything with magnets. These two centers are helping them identify and match shapes and measure items. This just makes learning fun!\r\nI sincerely appreciate the Donor's Choose organization for helping teachers provide new and exciting activities for their students. Donors who continually give to these projects are definitely making a huge impact of the learning that is happening in our schools. It has been so helpful in my special education classroom. I have been able to create an abundance of task boxes that my students have loved working with. It has also been extremely helpful to have the bean bag filler to fill more of my bean bags. This has been an alternate seating for some of my students who are wheelchair bound. They have been able to join their peers on the carpet while playing or having carpet time. It has also been so nice to have the cleaning supplies. Most of my students' supplies go to the gen-ed teachers, but I have to clean things more often to keep everyone healthy. It has been so much fun to watch the students build with the magnetic blocks, magnetic tiles, and Legos. We are currently spending a week being builders and using all these materials to build houses, bridges, and buildings. \r\nWhen the materials were delivered to our door, I heard lots of whispering and then squealing, as I pulled new hands on activities out of the box. Their excitement to get their hands on the materials and play with them is awesome. \r\nHaving new and interesting materials to add to our classroom routine just promotes thinking skills, building skills, imagination, and opportunities to share.\r\nI am so grateful that Donor's Choose helps teachers provide many opportunities for the kids in their classroom. This was not my first project funded by Donor's Choose and it will not be my last.
