The space box and ice cream box are their top favorites! They also enjoy using the Play-Doh during various activities, such as making shapes and practicing fine motor skills like rolling, cutting, and manipulating the dough. The three-drawer containers are used daily for independent tasks, which has made it much easier for students to access their own materials and work independently. My students also love the padded walls in our Zen Zone, and the weighted dinosaur and prop pillow have become staples in the space, providing students with a comfortable place to regulate and take a break when needed.\r\n\r\nBecause we are a brand-new classroom in a brand-new school, our students were experiencing many new things all at once. They immediately began exploring the materials and were especially drawn to the new sensory items throughout the classroom. It was wonderful to watch each student explore the different resources and discover the items they enjoyed the most. Seeing their excitement and curiosity as they interacted with the materials for the first time was such a special moment and reminded me how meaningful these resources are for our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe students I work with each have a cognitive disability, and our program is designed to provide individualized support while helping students build independence and develop important life and academic skills. Because we are a brand-new school and program for our district, we are still building our collection of classroom materials and resources. Our next steps include continuing to provide hands-on learning opportunities through manipulatives, sensory activities, and independent work tasks. We are also in need of outdoor equipment for recess so our students can continue developing gross motor skills, social skills, and independence while enjoying time outside.
