Your investment has opened up remarkable learning opportunities that go far beyond simply reading a compelling story.\r\nThrough The Maze Runner, students are developing crucial analytical skills by examining how authors craft complex fictional worlds. They're learning to identify and analyze key literary elements like world-building, character development, and thematic depth. The dystopian genre particularly encourages students to think critically about society, leadership, and moral choices - skills that translate directly to their understanding of our real world.\r\nIn our classroom, reading has become a truly dynamic experience. Students engage with the text through interactive discussions, creative writing responses, and collaborative analysis. During our reading blocks, you might see students:\r\n\r\nMapping the intricate maze alongside the characters, using textual evidence to support their designs\r\nDebating the ethical decisions characters face in small group discussions\r\nWriting diary entries from different characters' perspectives to develop deeper understanding of multiple viewpoints\r\nCreating vocabulary walls that track the unique terminology of the Glade, building their academic vocabulary","fullyFundedDate":1735491133348,"projectUrl":"project/running-toward-reading-the-maze-runner/8992158/","projectTitle":"Running Toward Reading: The Maze Runner Challenge for 8th Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Koulback","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9014901_orig.jpg?crop=875,875,x312,y117&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1682609637807","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9014901"},{"teacherId":9750946,"projectId":8786566,"letterContent":"I want to thank you for your generous donation of the graphic novel A Wrinkle in Time. Your kindness has made a meaningful impact on my students and my ability to meet their needs through the Talented and Gifted program.\r\n\r\nThe students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to come to the TAG classroom during their Reading and Language Arts class for a unique learning experience that was tailored to their needs. The opportunity to read and discuss this higher-level text allowed them to feel seen and valued for their abilities. They relished being with like-minded peers, where they could engage in deep, thought-provoking conversations (and many debates) about the themes, characters, and illustrations in the novel.\r\n\r\nThe graphic format of A Wrinkle in Time provided a fresh perspective that sparked a level of critical analysis unique to graphic novel writing. Students explored the ways the illustrations enhanced or detracted from the story. It was fun for me to witness their excitement and connection to this unit, made possible by your donation.\r\n\r\nThank you, again, for supporting my students' learning and helping create a space where they could feel challenged, grow, and enjoy the company of peers who need the same from education. Your generosity made an impact on this group of students and will continue to impact students for several years, as this is something that I can use again and again.","fullyFundedDate":1732731381355,"projectUrl":"project/graphic-novel-study-differentiated/8786566/","projectTitle":"Graphic Novel Study - Differentiated","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Parkhill","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9750946"},{"teacherId":751900,"projectId":8437441,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for contributing to this project to get graphic novels into the hands of my 8th grade students. This year our department decided to add a mini-unit teaching students how to read graphic novels. Many of our students already read graphic novels but they haven't been explicitly taught how to read them or what all the different features of graphic novels are. We spent some time going over the different text features (for example: speech & thought bubbles, narration, and onomatopoeia) and picture features (for example: camera angles, splash panels/pages, and zooming in/out). 8th grade students got to pick their own graphic novel to read and many students chose to read an I Survived graphic novel.\r\n\r\nMy students' faces lit up when they first saw the materials. They were thrilled they had these brand new graphic novels to read that no other students had read before. They also loved there was a variety of choices for them. Instead of purchasing many copies of a few graphic novels, I chose to purchase a few copies of many graphic novels. That allowed students to pick a topic of their choice. Some students loved reading more about the Revolutionary War while other students loved reading about shark or bear attacks. They thrived reading these graphic novels, with many students choosing to read 2-3 graphic novels in the 10 days of our unit. At the end of the unit I asked students to reflect on what went well for them in this unit. Overwhelmingly students enjoyed this unit citing evidence of how much easier it was for them to understand the story with both words and pictures. They also were shocked at how quickly they were able to read a book and this boosted their reading confidence greatly. I have many students seeking out other graphic novels which is a huge win after such a short unit.","fullyFundedDate":1727834432647,"projectUrl":"project/historical-graphic-novels-for-8th-grade/8437441/","projectTitle":"Historical Graphic Novels for 8th Grade Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Guntly","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp751900_orig.jpg?crop=1088,1088,x0,y403&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1717438799018","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/751900"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_127823","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":537,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":19,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":88,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":79.5,"schoolId":127823,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dallas Center - Grimes Oak View Junior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dallas Center - Grimes Oak View Junior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/iowa/dallas-center-grimes-cmty-sd/dallas-center-grimes-oak-view/127823"}
