The first time that we set out out the boomwhackers and used them to play songs together was incredibly exciting. Every student was captivated for the entire class period, making song requests, and already asking when we would get to use them again. I see a lot of hope in how I will be able to continue to use them to teach music and rhythm to my students.\r\nI plan to continue to use the exercise equipment to teach self-regulation strategies to students who sometimes struggle with regulating without movement. The books are a mix of biography, non-fiction, and fiction books, and they represent many different cultures. There are picture books and chapter books of all sizes that will meet the needs of so many students who don't often see their stories in print. I think the major significance of the fossils has been for the kids to experience and think about extinct animals in a whole new perspective. One of the two collections we received had separate boxes of fossils from all different locations and eras. That made teaching the different types amazing this year. We have been teaching emotions and zones of regulation, where these resources have been super helpful to continue teaching. The Express Your Feelings Sensory Bottles have been used to visually teach students their emotions. My students are using the new resources for regulation. Specifically, students have used the lights for visual sensory input for self-regulation in a moment of increased over-stimulation. By receiving these various regulation tools, our school has a more inclusive, supportive learning environment, and space to promote academic success.\r\n\r\nMy students were excited to see all of the new fidgets. Most kids are seeking out these materials for comfort and relaxation. Objects like sensory lights, stress balls, and a weighted lap pad instantly attracted their attention. The students explored different textured surfaces, soothing sounds, and calming colors. The variability of the resources allowed us to differentiate to a variety of student needs. Students leave the regulation station feeling regulated, being able to manage their emotions, therefore allowing them to improve their focus. \r\n\r\nOur next steps are to build a routine including social skills for our RTI students, and a space for behavioral students that require more intentional social-emotional learning. This space will not only be important for emotional regulation, but our future endeavors will include a space for teaching these skills. In the future, I would like to use these tools to create a classroom environment in which it is comfortable to develop higher level executive functioning skills for all students. These tools can also help me to teach students about their own nervous system and how to make friends with it in such a way that they can recognize coping mechanisms that will allow them to have life long success. The students who we teach often have difficulty recognizing their own emotional triggers and ways to cope, and as a result are limited both socially and academically.
