It has been incredibly exciting to put all the new tools and supplies to use. Seeing the students' faces light up when they realized they each had their own set of gloves and a sturdy hand trowel was priceless. They particularly loved the new hats – it was quite a sight to see a whole crew of mini-gardeners, all sporting their stylish new headwear, ready to dig in. \r\n\r\nWith our new tools and supplies, our garden will undoubtedly be flourishing by the time school starts in August! All current members are invited to return at that time when we can see the \"fruits\" of our efforts as we harvest our goodies. When we do that we will also be learning about different ways to prepare the produce. \r\n\r\nThis ongoing project has not only taught them valuable lessons about sustainable living and healthy eating but also given them a real sense of accomplishment and connection to nature. Up till now we have only a few after school clubs for our children to attend. We have a very popular Lego Club, a Chess Club, Ukulele Club, and now the Garden Club. \r\nWith us beginning the club so late in the year we have not been able to do a lot, but we have been able to have a handful of meetings. I wanted to make sure that within' this short time frame, I was able to utilize the equipment that I asked for (the iPad). I took photos of different locations around our school that needed beautification and presented it to the children so they knew where we would be working for this project. We then grabbed all of our gardening tools & some plants, that were also donated & went to work planting, as seen in the attached photos.\r\nThis fall we will be using our new piece of tech to design gardens in a brand new outdoor education area that is being added to our school grounds. We will also be using it to track our plant growth, design a watering schedule, and research any issues that arise with our crops. Since receiving the generous donations, we've successfully completed over ten projects. The enthusiasm has spread beyond our group as other students notice the builds taking shape and are eager to join in. The 3-in-1 sets have been a perfect addition, allowing me to dismantle completed projects so curious students can have a chance to finish them. The house builds, though the most challenging, have been the most popular. On some days, the students simply enjoy playing with the completed sets, and having the flexibility to engage in creative builds has been incredibly rewarding. \r\n\r\nSnap Circuits have also captured the interest of a few students. While assembling the circuits is quite challenging, it has been a thrilling and interactive way to understand how energy moves. One of the most exciting moments was when we managed to get the small helicopter airborne (unexpectedly) for the first time!\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, I plan to further nurture my students' creativity by introducing open-ended building challenges. While we teach social emotional skills to all students, some of our students need additional support and reinforcement. Having a designated IPad to load and assign digital assignments that can then be processed with a caring adult allows us to make this learning more accessible to more children. \r\nThis has been especially relevant in promoting restorative practices. Rather than disconnected consequences such as suspensions or loss of privileges these assignments prompt kids to connect their actions to the greater community. \r\nRecently we had a student start a fight in his classroom and the teacher had to separate the two boys. The student did not respond to consequences or the impact on his future. However, he was visibly upset when the lesson prompted him to check off all of the people impacted by his behavior. He then had to write an apology message to his teacher noting the stress and disappointment he added to her day. Processing the impact on his teacher made much more of an impression on this student than any consequence. \r\nWith the use of technology, students have a more accessible means to work through these lessons. Rather than having to write, students can type or dictate through the microphone. Using multiple options for communication allows students every opportunity to think through the assignment before speaking with the adult.","fullyFundedDate":1739492655026,"projectUrl":"project/improving-social-emotional-learning-with/9110902/","projectTitle":"Improving Social Emotional Learning with Technology","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Romine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3411101_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1568285941269","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3411101"},{"teacherId":9922091,"projectId":9111585,"letterContent":"My students and I thoroughly enjoyed using the resources you so graciously donated on a project that went along with the theme of our Reading Unit.
