With your help, I'm able to truly offer a variety of new novels that enrich the lives of my high ability learners. Adventure stories such as Mars Patel, Gregor the Overlander, and The Tale of Desperaux had my students talking, sharing books, and having fun reading. These new texts allowed them to look for conflicts, examine change in how characters live, and even theme. I am so thankful for students to have CHOICE in the books that they read instead of only a full class novel. \r\n\r\nSeveral of these stories were openings to a full series that my kids have dove into headfirst. A group of four girls is into the second novel of the Mars Patel series and two of my boys loved the Swifts! We had moments of laughter and moments of tears as we read this story. I've seen a transformation in them in how they respect one another and admire each others' differences. Most recently, they had a new student join our grade and when they noticed he had no friends yet, they used their empathy that they learned from Wonder in order to go reach out to this new student and welcome him, even though he wasn't in our class. These lessons go beyond understanding literature- Wonder becomes a guide post for how to treat people. As a culminating activity, every child did a self portrait and created their own precepts--rules to live by. I am so grateful to have your support for reading in our classroom. I have a mission to introduce students to more subjects than what the standards call for and to also use famous individuals to inspire my students to have a growth mindset. With these picture book biographies, I am going to be able to do just that in a less threatening way than a full biography. I still remember in fourth grade when I had a biography project -- the research, the poster board. I want to take that same concept and allow students to not only remember notable people, but to see how that person's life has changed over time, to analyze how they've had a growth mindset, and to draw comparisons to their own lives.\r\nThank you for providing books that touch on unique creators, artists, authors, and more!
