We had moments of laughter and moments of tears as we read this story. I've seen a transformation in them in how they respect one another and admire each others' differences. Most recently, they had a new student join our grade and when they noticed he had no friends yet, they used their empathy that they learned from Wonder in order to go reach out to this new student and welcome him, even though he wasn't in our class. These lessons go beyond understanding literature- Wonder becomes a guide post for how to treat people. As a culminating activity, every child did a self portrait and created their own precepts--rules to live by. I still remember in fourth grade when I had a biography project -- the research, the poster board. We have a full library of beautiful graphic novels that they are able to grab and dive into. They are quick reads, but full of great vocabulary that they can use. Graphic novels teach visual literacy, careful reading, and reading in various layouts. I am so encouraged that so many kids grab a graphic novel off of our shelf. Encouraging reading young is important---even if it's not a standard novel.
