We have been enjoying the books you helped us purchase for a couple of months now, and during this time they have been in very heavy rotation. My goal of inspiring more independent reading has definitely been met. Students are picking these books up at every spare moment, and even arguing about who gets to read them next. The \"I Survived\" books and Coraline have been the most popular, but all of them have been read so much that they have barely been in their place in the library.\r\n\r\nFor many students, 5th grade can be the beginning of a reading slump, which can really hurt their progress, especially if they are already reading below grade level. Thank you for being part of the solution to this problem, by giving our class books that are \"cool\" and fun to read, that they just can't put down! If we can keep them loving reading, we can avoid the slump and help them become lifelong readers. As I'm sure you already know, a daily reading practice helps improve vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and written expression, as well as knowledge about the wider world. All of those things add up to success in the long run.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, I want to thank you for helping me to honor both of the languages of my students by helping me fill up the Spanish side of my library to make it more balanced with the English side. I have never had a Donor's Choose project that was quite so popular and heavily used! To start the year off I randomly picked students to use the different flexible seating options so that everyone could try them out to see what worked for them. My plan was to eventually narrow it down to the few students who really needed an alternative seating option. However, truly at least 75% of each of my classes love them and find them to be useful on a daily basis. While I have a few students who need them more than others, the majority of my students benefit from the extra movement and variety of body shapes that these chairs and lap desks provide.\r\n\r\nMost of my students are English language learners, and I'm not sure that all of them could fully express their gratitude in their thank you letters, but from their hearts they do thank you deeply. I only wish you could be a fly on the wall in my class and see the impact of your gift in person. Students are learning what their body needs to help their mind focus. They are strengthening core muscles and stretching as they work throughout the day. And, perhaps the question you may be wondering from my original request: they are NOT falling out of their chairs! Truly, the number of daily crashes is a small fraction of what it used to be. As wobbly as some of the seats are, I have never had a student fall while using a wobble chair or cushion, so we are safer as well as more focused.\r\n\r\nI am beyond grateful for your generous heart and the support you are providing to my classes. Your support extends, long term, to our society and the humans who will one day shape our world. I take their training very seriously and your gift uplifts me in that work.
