Knowing the theme ahead of time, I tell the students before reading the book to listen for details to support friendship. Now, the students are collecting evidence. After reading, they chat with a partner and share examples of friendship from the text. \r\nWe share out as a whole group, then use this information to write a paragraph answering, \"What is the theme of the book? Give examples.\"\r\nThe biggest impact on their learning is when they recognize examples of other themes like Compassion or Working Together.
