The art materials have given them creative outlets to personalize their purchases, while the incentives have reinforced lessons on budgeting, opportunity cost, and delayed gratification. Most importantly, your donation sparked conversations about personal finance that many students had never had before like conversations about saving, interest, investing, and planning for the future.\r\n\r\nConcepts that were hard to grasp became more easily understood with the use of the \"Bonkers Bucks\". Using our economy as an example, inflation was shown through a demonstration of how much less valuable \"Bonkers Bucks\" were when many of them were distributed to everybody. I learned strategies to keep both my students and myself emotionally regulated throughout the day. These strategies include deep breathing, grounding techniques, creating a safe and supportive classroom environment, and mindfulness practices. I also attended Breathe for Change's InspirED conference in Chicago which brought together over 500 educators for two days. I walked away with a better understanding of how to use these techniques in my classroom.\r\n\r\nI have implemented a settling-in routine for every class period. I start with 3 collective breaths to settle our nervous systems. I then use a Tibetan \"singing bowl\" which creates a chime sound. Students listen for the sound to end and then hold up peace fingers or a thumbs up. This is a grounding technique that brings students' attention to the present moment and away from negative thoughts and emotions. I have noticed a decrease in behavior and an increase in student engagement. Students are now leading the settling in routine and remind me to do it when I forget.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in Breathe for Change.
