My students operate a coffee shop at our school as part of their vocational training. They are responsible for brewing the coffee, setting up the coffee cart, providing customer service, making change, keeping track of inventory, and cleaning up. In addition, they benefit socially from increased interaction with peers and having a more visible presence in our school. This student-run coffee shop provides opportunities for vocational training and increases my students' chances of being employed as adults. We need coffee, tea, cups and other supplies. My students have many barriers to overcome in order to get a job. I hope that this coffee shop will give them an opportunity to become more prepared for employment in the future.
