They are bright, thoughtful, and deeply curious, and they do their best learning when they can bring who they are into the room. Working with Hot Comb, The Magic Fish, and Jane, the Fox and Me gave them stories that felt alive and relevant—stories that reflected queer, BIPOC, and neurodivergent experiences while also inviting them to step into perspectives beyond their own. Students were eager to talk, to question, and to sit with moments that felt emotionally honest or challenging. These books helped them understand that comics can handle complex ideas about identity, belonging, and growing up with the same depth and seriousness as any novel or poem they study in school.\r\n\r\nHaving their own copies of the books changed how students engaged day to day. They could write in the margins, linger on a single image, and flip back and forth as ideas developed. This freedom led to richer conversations, more thoughtful analysis, and more confident creative work, especially for students who think visually or express themselves best through images. I saw students making personal connections, noticing artistic choices on their own, and sharing insights they might not have voiced otherwise. By funding this project, you gave my students the chance to slow down, think deeply, and feel that their ways of reading and creating are valued.","fullyFundedDate":1755447052486,"projectUrl":"project/make-reading-inclusive-and-exciting/9567271/","projectTitle":"Make Reading Inclusive and Exciting!","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Beineke","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10094263"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_27309","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":218,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":67,"percentAsian":15,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":60,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"10 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"6.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":41.2,"schoolId":27309,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Indiana Academy - Science Math and Humanities on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Indiana Academy - Science Math and Humanities","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/indiana/indiana-department-of-education/indiana-academy-science-math-human/27309"}
