Students went outside to collect battery charge precentages over time. They then collected discharging data by powering small electronics in the classroom. Finally, they fit linear equations to the data, and used that data to make numerical predictions.\r\n\r\nThis project also opened up a valuable class discussion that nicely tied the end of one unit to the beginning of the next. When students observed that the charge speed was significantly slower than the discharge speed and the graph looked like a lopsided \"L\", we were able to segue into a discussion of different function types. There was a brief debate on linear, absolute value, and piecewise defined functions before the class came to the concensus that we had unintentionally modeled the battery's charge as a piecewise function. Conveniently, piecewise functions will be our next topic.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project strengthened students' ability to build linear models from data, use those models to make and test predictions, and reason about when a linear model is or is not the right tool for the situation.","fullyFundedDate":1786672271129,"projectUrl":"project/power-raw-power/10434597/","projectTitle":"Power!
